Experimental Multiphase Flow – Cavitation

项目介绍

Job description

The primary objective of the NWO-sponsored AQUA program is to gain a better understanding of the effect of water quality on multiphase flow dynamics, in particular on cavitation and air lubrication for drag reduction. The participating universities and research institutes include Delft University of Technology, University of Twente (Physics of Fluids group), and Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research. At Delft University, we currently have 1 open PhD position related to cavitation research.

Background
Bubbly flows attenuate underwater sound and can reduce the friction drag of a ship, as a result of which less fuel is needed. Although the behavior of air bubbles in freshwater is known reasonably well, bubbles in saline seawater behave very differently. In this program, the researchers will compare the dynamics of bubbly flows in different types of water, varying from freshwater to natural seawater, to gain a better understanding of how bubbles can be used to manage friction, sound propagation and cavitation. The ultimate aim is to be able to predict how the water quality (gas and chemical content) influences drag reduction and cavitation hindrance.

Project description
The advertised position concerns an experimental research project on water quality effects on developed sheet cavitation dynamics and radiated noise. Sheet cavitation is a dominant type of cavitation on hydrofoils and marine propellers. The study will be conducted in the new and unique Delft Multiphase Flow lab which is operational since early 2021. The required infrastructure (high-speed imaging, tomographic particle image velocimetry) is available. Close collaboration with other projects in the AQUA research program is encouraged, as well as with other research groups working in the same discipline.

The total duration of this PhD project is 4 years, with a starting date no later than Dec. 31, 2022.

Requirements

We are looking for enthusiastic researchers, who want to develop their know-how and experience in a challenging academic environment. In more specific terms:

  • The successful applicants are in the first 4 years after graduation (MSc) of their research career.
  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering, Maritime Technology, (Applied) Physics, Aeronautics, or equivalent degree with a clear focus on fluid mechanics is a prerequisite.
  • Experience in conducting experimental work is regarded as a strength.
  • A critical and inquisitive attitude with regard to results is expected, which translates into formulating new research questions.
  • Ability to function both in a team and independently.
  • Good communication skills, with a sound knowledge of the English language, and both oral and written proficiency.

Doing a PhD at TU Delft requires English proficiency at a certain level to ensure that the candidate is able to communicate and interact well, participate in English-taught Doctoral Education courses, and write scientific articles and a final thesis. For more details please check the Graduate Schools Admission Requirements.

Conditions of employment

Doctoral candidates will be offered a 4-year period of employment in principle, but in the form of 2 employment contracts. An initial 1,5 year contract with an official go/no go progress assessment within 15 months. Followed by an additional contract for the remaining 2,5 years assuming everything goes well and performance requirements are met.

Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, increasing from € 2541 per month in the first year to € 3247 in the fourth year. As a PhD candidate you will be enrolled in the TU Delft Graduate School. The TU Delft Graduate School provides an inspiring research environment with an excellent team of supervisors, academic staff and a mentor. The Doctoral Education Programme is aimed at developing your transferable, discipline-related and research skills.

The TU Delft offers a customisable compensation package, discounts on health insurance and sport memberships, and a monthly work costs contribution. Flexible work schedules can be arranged. For international applicants we offer the Coming to Delft Service and Partner Career Advice to assist you with your relocation.
