Enzyme Engineering through Substrate-binding Domains

If you would like to contribute to the green transition, you now have the chance. A PhD position is available in the Protein Chemistry and Enzyme Technology section at the Department of Biotechnology and Biomedicine. The research project “Substrate-binding domains as facilitator for enzymatic waste management of man-made polymeric materials” has been granted by Independent Research Fund Denmark. The first part of the project focuses on the identification of substrate-binding domains, which can bind to polymeric materials, while the second task is to fuse these domains to enzymes already capable to degrade polymeric materials, albeit inefficiently.

Responsibilities and qualifications
Your tasks will be to:

  • Identify substrate-binding domains to include in a binding screen.
  • Establish the screening methods
  • Characterise selected substrate-binding domains and optimize binding through different protein engineering strategies
  • Fuse identified substrate-binding domains with selected enzymes and characterize the effect

Ideally you should have the following qualifications:

  • Knowledge of a programming language
  • Experience in bioinformatics analysis
  • Interest in experimental work, including recombinant protein production and purification, enzymatic assays, protein-ligand interaction analysis, and protein stability analysis

The project is interdisciplinary in nature, and a part of the project will involve development of screening methods, so we are looking for a person, who are independent and creative. You will be joining a young team dedicated to understand and develop new enzymes useful in industrial biotechnology.

You must have a two-year master’s degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master’s degree.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
