Join our team and contribute to the development of innovative and high-performance converter technologies within an international research project focused on bidirectional charging and vehicle-grid integration. 

About us 

We at the Division of Electric Power Engineering conduct research within a broad range of topics in electric power technology. Our purpose is to develop interdisciplinary research areas within the university as well as with external partners. Our research is based on a solid theoretical basis and extensive experimental verification in our laboratories. Research activities at the division are organized in two research units: (1) Electrical Machines and Power Electronics, and (2) Power Grid and Components.

In the research unit Electrical Machines and Power Electronics, we are about 25 persons, of which two third are PhD students. Our research directions include: (1) electrical machines; (2) traction inverters; (3) high frequency power electronics and charging; (4) electric drive systems, and (5) battery energy storage.

About the research project  

The research project is part of a larger project, BiWPT, funded by EU under MSCA doctoral network. The BiWPT project has a mission to train a new generation of experts who possess the skills and fundamental knowledge required to effectively address the challenges of bidirectional WPT systems for electric mobility, enabling vehicle-grid integration in support of Europe’s energy transition. Chalmers’ part of the project will hire 2 doctoral candidates (DC) to achieve 2 objectives:

  1. Design, implementation, and control of compact and cost-effective wireless power transfer converters capable of robust bidirectional operation. The DC will investigate suitable topologies, materials, and components to achieve high efficiency and scalability up to 500 kW. Advanced control algorithms will be developed to ensure stable power flow under varying coupling conditions and battery states. The designed system will be experimentally validated to assess efficiency, reliability, and fault tolerance. 
  2. Development of integration and deployment strategies for high-power WPT systems in heavy-duty vehicles, addressing cost, safety, and sustainability barriers. The DC will study architectures for system integration into vehicles, design high-power WPT systems including mechanical interfaces, and implement digital-twin models for real-time validation of the effectiveness of bidirectional WPT. An important aspect of this task is that sustainability and recyclability assessments of system components will guide the design optimization.

The doctoral students will be partly involved in other research activities that contribute to the training purpose. 

Who we are looking for

The following requirements are mandatory:

  • Master’s degree with 120 credits in electrical engineering with power electronics and control as major direction.
  • Comprehensive knowledge on hardware and control of power electronics converters and vehicle chargers.
  • Skills using design and simulation tools such as Simulink, PLECS, and LT-Spice for modeling and analysis of research objects.
  • Experiences on prototyping and experimental tests of power electronics and control systems.
  • According to the Mobility Rule of this EU project, applicants must NOT have resided or carried out their main activity in Sweden for more than 12 months in the 3 years prior to the recruitment date.

The following experience will strengthen your application: 

  • Knowledge and experiences on electromagnetics, electrical machines, motor control, PCB design and CAD.
  • Knowledge on power system, distribution system, energy storage, and drive system onboard vehicles.  
  • Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work effectively with colleagues and industrial experts.
  • Documented academic publications.

What you will do

  • Take courses at an advanced level within the Graduate school of electrical engineering.
  • Develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing.
  • As teaching assistant on Chalmers’ undergraduate/postgratuate level corresponding to maximum 20 percent of whole doctoral study time.
  • Our expectation on your contributions to the research topic and the project team is high. In return you will receive excellent support from other team members and learn into your role fast. Of course, you should write and publish high quality academic papers based on your findings and research results.

Contract terms  

  • The Doctoral student positions are fully funded from start. 
  • The positions are started with a fixed-term appointment of four years, with a later extension for maximum one more year based on teaching tasks. The teaching tasks up to 20% can be required by the department. The teaching effort in the first three years will be limited to 5% for DCs hired by this EU project. 
  • A starting salary of 35,725 SEK per month. 
  • Doctoral studies require physical presence throughout the entire study period. A valid residence permit must be presented by the study start date; otherwise the admission may be withdrawn. 
  • The DCs will participate in two planned secondments as part of the doctoral training programme: an academic secondment at the co-supervising university abroad and an industrial secondment. The DCs is expected to submit regular progress reports to the local and network supervisors. The DCs will actively participate in BiWPT’s training, dissemination, communication, and exploitation activities. The DCs will prepare a doctoral thesis and publish scientific articles related to the research project. Differing from other universities, PhD students at Chalmers will study a certain number of courses up between 45 and 60 credits and work as teaching assistant for up to 20% of total employed time. The total PhD employment at Chalmers can extended up to 5 years.
