Job assignments

We are looking for a PhD student for the research program Multidisciplinary Program on Oral Testimony (MPORT): Challenges and Innovations for Obtaining Evidence from Human Sources. MPORT is a larger research program supported by the Swedish Research Council, that studies different aspects of oral evidence in criminal cases. 

As a doctoral student, you will be part of the research group Criminal, Legal, and Investigative Psychology (CLIP). The research that you will conduct, within the framework of the research program, will focus on the advantages and disadvantages of taking oral evidence, such as testimony, early in the legal process. The research work will consist of planning, conducting, and analyzing the results of primarily quantitative studies. You will also write scientific articles on collected material and take courses within the framework of the doctoral program. The work requires a good ability to plan, analyze, work independently, and collaborate in groups. Another important part of the work is to communicate with various legal actors, as well as international researchers. Strong proficiency with English (both spoken and written) is therefore required.

Within the framework of your doctoral employment, you can have departmental service to the extent of a maximum of 20% of full-time distributed throughout the training period. Institutional service usually includes teaching at first level and advanced level.  

Eligibility

To be eligible for the position, the applicant must meet both general and specific entry requirements.

To meet basic eligibility requirements, the applicant must have:

  • -completed a second-cycle degree
  • -completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 credits are in second-cycle courses
  • -or have acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way, either in Sweden or abroad  

To meet specific eligibility requirements, the applicant must have:

  • -completed at least 90 higher education credits of first-cycle courses in psychology, in addition to
  • -at least 60 higher education credits of second-cycle courses, of which at least 15 higher education credits are in scientific methods, as well as a thesis of at least 15 higher education credits, or knowledge equivalent to that listed above, acquired in another manner  

Assessment criteria

Selection among applicants who meet the basic and specific entry requirements will be based on the ability to complete the postgraduate program. Substantial emphasis is placed on the applicant’s previous thesis/degree projects, any previous research-related tasks, personal suitability, and other relevant qualifications. Applicants should have an interest in legal psychology research. Training or experience in legal psychology research is an advantage. Applicants should be highly goal-oriented, have good cooperation skills, have good planning skills, and be ready to take initiative. Experience of working in research projects, coding and analysis of qualitative and quantitative data, and scientific writing is an advantage. Competence with statistical programming is also an advantage.

Employment

After being admitted to the PhD programme, you will receive a doctoral employment (doktorandanställning) at the University of Gothenburg. Employment of doctoral students is regulated in the Higher Education Ordinance, chapter 5. The initial appointment may apply for no longer than one year. An appointment may be renewed for no more than two years at a time. A person may be appointed to a doctoral studentship for a total of eight years. The total employment period may, however, not exceed the time corresponding to full-time third-cycle study for four years.

Salaries for doctoral students are regulated in a local agreement at the University.
