Doctoral position in Multilingualism

The Department of Swedish, Multilingualism and Language Technology has announced two funded positions for a postgraduate student in Multilingualism.

Duties   

The successful candidates will devote their time primarily to their own postgraduate education, including research to be presented in a doctoral dissertation and obligatory coursework. They may, however, undertake a limited amount of teaching, administration or research not directly connected to his/her dissertation topic.    

Doctoral studies comprises four years of full-time study, and leads to a doctoral degree.    

As part of your employment as a doctoral student, you may have departmental duties corresponding to up to 20 % of full-time employment, distributed throughout your study period, and result in a corresponding extension of the studies. Departmental duties usually consist of teaching at first- and second-cycle levels, but may also include research and administration.  

Eligibility   

Doctoral education requires general eligibility and, where appropriate, specific eligibility as set out in the general syllabus for the subject.  

The general eligibility requirements for doctoral studies are:    

  1. having completed a degree at second-cycle level, or
  2. the fulfilment of course requirements totalling at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits must be at second-cycle level, or  
  3. the acquisition of equivalent knowledge in some other way, either in Sweden or abroad. 

Specific entry requirements, Multilingualism: At least 30 higher education credits must be from advanced level courses in the Humanities, Social Sciences or Educational Sciences, and include a research paper of at least 15 credits. In addition, such knowledge of Swedish and English as is required to assimilate compulsory course elements and actively participate in seminars and other research activities at the university. Depending on the applicant’s research focus, special language skills may also be necessary.    

Assessment criteria   

Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for education on a doctoral level are given in Higher Education Ordinance (chapter 7 § 34–41). 

Selection among applicants who meet the requirements for basic and special eligibility is based on the ability to benefit from the doctoral education. Great emphasis is placed on the applicant’s previous theses/degree projects, and previous research-related tasks. Independent work with a linguistic focus at second-cycle level is meritorious. Those applicants who are considered to be most suitable for the position will be invited to an interview. In some cases, this may be conducted online (see also Instructions).    

Admission and employment   

Once you have been admitted to doctoral studies, you will be employed as a doctoral student at the University of Gothenburg.   

The provisions for employment as a doctoral student can be found in ordinance SFS 1993:100.    

Initial employment as a doctoral student may apply for a maximum of one year, and may be renewed by a maximum of two years at a time.  

A doctoral student may be employed as a doctoral student for a maximum of eight years, but the total period of employment may not be longer than the equivalent of full-time education at doctoral level for four years.   

The PhD program starts on 1 september 2025. The content and scope follows the general syllabus for a doctoral degree in Swedish as a Second Language (https://www.gu.se/sites/default/files/2023-11/asp-flerspr%C3%A5kighet-2024-01-01-en.pdf). General and specific entrance requirements are described below. Those appointed for the positions as PhD students are expected to locate their studies in the Department.   

The University applies a local agreement on salaries for doctoral students.

Please note, doctoral studies at The Department of Swedish, Multilingualism and Language Technology require physical presence to conduct the studies. If the admitted applicant needs a residence permit for higher education to pursue studies in Sweden, The Department of Swedish, Multilingualism and Language Technology has the right to revoke the admission decision if the applicant cannot present a valid residence permit no later than at the start of the studies.
