项目介绍
The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 56 000 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.
The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg has about 200 employees and is the largest department of mathematics in Sweden. The department has three scientific divisions, Algebra and Geometry, Analysis and Probability Theory, and Applied Mathematics and Statistics and conducts successful research in pure and applied mathematics and mathematical statistics in a wide range of research areas.
We have an international environment with frequent exchanges with other universities around the world. The department provides a friendly, creative, and supportive atmosphere with a steady flow of international guests. There are many committed teachers with extensive and broad experience of all aspects of higher education. More information about us can be found on our website: https://www.chalmers.se/en/departments/mv/
Our department continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all our activities. We work actively to be a parent-friendly organization.
We are looking for a PhD students at the division Analysis and Probability Theory. The research project is in spectral theory of differential operators, with Simon Larson as supervisor.
General information about being a doctoral student at the University of Gothenburg can be found on the university’s doctoral student pages.
Subject area
Mathematics
Specific subject description
The position is in the field of spectral theory of differential operators, where the properties of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions are studied in relation to the attributes of the operator. This involves a combination of techniques from mathematical analysis (including partial differential equations, calculus of variations, and Fourier analysis) but can also connect to other fields in mathematics, such as geometry and probability theory. Specific topics can include the dependence of the spectrum on the underlying geometry and coefficients of the operator, or the study of operators that are, in some sense, extremal.
Job assignments
As a PhD student you will be part of an international research environment while you expand your knowledge of the field and write your thesis. This gives opportunities for many inspiring conversations, a lot of autonomous work and some travel. You are expected to develop your own ideas and communicate scientific results orally as well as in written form. In addition, the position will normally include 20% departmental work, mostly teaching duties.
The employment is limited to a maximum of four years, with the possibility for a one-year extension due to departmental duties.
Eligibility
The eligibility for academic positions is given in the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance. To qualify for the position, you must have obtained a master’s degree or a 4-year bachelor’s degree, or expect to complete that degree by the time the employment starts.
Assessment
Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for academic positions are given in the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance.
Applicants should have a solid background in mathematical analysis, with excellent course grades and undergraduate thesis work. Good verbal and written communication skills in English are essential.
The applications will be assessed by a local recruitment committee at Mathematical Sciences.
Admission and employment
Once you have been admitted to doctoral studies, you will be employed as a doctoral student at the University of Gothenburg.
The provisions for employment as a doctoral student can be found in ordinance SFS 1993:100.
Initial employment as a doctoral student may apply for a maximum of one year, and may be renewed by a maximum of two years at a time.
A doctoral student may be employed as a doctoral student for a maximum of eight years, but the total period of employment may not be longer than the equivalent of full-time education at doctoral level for four years.
Type of employment: Fixed-term employment, limited to four years with the possibility of one year extension.
Extent: 100 %
Location: Analysis and Probability Theory, Department of Mathematical Sciences, University of Gothenburg
First day of employment: August 15, 2025, or as agreed
