Doctoral student in Accelerated solar cell materials exploration

项目介绍

Would you like to develop sustainable solutions for mitigating climate change? Are you interested in materials, coding, and automation? This highly multidisciplinary doctoral student position at Chalmers University of Technology might be for you!

About us

This doctoral student position is placed at the Division of Computational Mechanics and Materials Engineering, which belongs to the Department of Industrial and Materials Science.

The Department of Industrial and Materials Science shares knowledge and their vision of technical solutions for the future industry in a sustainable society. Through excellent research, innovation, and education, we contribute to the development of future industrial value chains.

In the Division of Computational Mechanics and Materials Engineering we foster an inclusive, friendly, and helpful work environment to which we welcome you to contribute. Our activities focus on the modelling of the mechanics of structures, components, and processes along with involved materials, thus providing mechanics-based solutions and virtual solution tools to our engineering challenges.

About the research project

In this project, you will co-develop more stable perovskite solar cells and effective automated approaches for increasingly autonomous materials experiments (for further information, please check here).

This project provides you an excellent starting point for an academic career that could focus on sustainable materials development (for solar cells but also, e.g., batteries or electronics) or accelerated / autonomous experiments. Sustainable energy and accelerated laboratories are also trending technologies in industry and start up scene alike. The framing of the project can be tuned according to your interests.

Who we are looking for

The following requirements are mandatory:

  • To qualify as a Doctoral student, you must have a Master’s degree (masterexamen) of 120 credits or a Master’s degree (magisterexamen) of 60 credits* in Materials Science or Engineering, Physics, Chemistry / Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Mechanics, Solid Mechanics, or similar field.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Education on materials science (e.g., from the viewpoint of physics, chemistry, or mechanical engineering), programming, machine learning, or equipment automation (including microfluidic systems, robotics and remote sensing).
  • Knowledge in programming is required (Python is beneficial but not mandatory).
  • Willingness to do experimental science, including instrument building, sample preparation, and working in laboratories.

*for students with an education earned outside of Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor’s degree is accepted.

You will be expected to take on responsibilities within the project, be creative, and, when needed, work independently. Due to the interdisciplinary and broad topic area, teamwork and social skills are also important.

The following experience will strengthen your application:

  • Work experience in materials science, programming, machine learning, or equipment automation; or education on multiple of these areas. This is a doctoral student position, so you are not expected to be a ready-made expert in (any of) these areas – you will be given proper guidance along the project.
  • Demonstrated interest in the above-mentioned topics but also in handcraft hobbies, photography, or tooling.

What you will do

  • You will combine accelerated, experimental materials screening and optimization approaches, as well as in-depth characterizations of the promising materials candidates – later also full solar cells – in your work. You will design and implement laboratory synthesis and characterization equipment with a high level of automation, and code machine learning -aided control systems for them using Python.
  • Take courses at an advanced level within the Graduate school of Materials Science
  • Develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing
  • The position generally also includes teaching at Chalmers’ undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding to 20 percent of working hours

Contract terms

  • The Doctoral student positions are fully funded from start.
  • The position is a fixed-term appointment of four years, with the possibility to teach up to 20%, which extends the position up to five years.
  • A starting salary of 34,550 SEK per month (valid from May 25, 2025).
  • Doctoral studies require physical presence throughout the entire study period. A valid residence permit must be presented by the study start date; otherwise the admission can be withdrawn.

What we offer

  • As a Doctoral student at Chalmers, you are an employee and enjoy all employee benefits. Read more about  working at Chalmers  and our benefits for employees.
  • A dynamic and inspiring working environment in the coastal city of Gothenburg
  • Read more about Sweden’s generous parental leave, subsidized day care, free schools, healthcare etc at Move To Gothenburg.

Chalmers is dedicated to improving gender balance and actively works with equality projects, such as the GENIE Initiative for gender equality and excellence

We celebrate diversity and consider equality and inclusion as fundamental aspects of all our activities.

Chalmers offers Swedish courses to help you settle in if Swedish is not your native language.
