Doctoral researcher and postdoctoral researcher in Swedish School of Social Science

项目介绍

Swedish School of Social Science at the University of Helsinki invites applications for the positions of Doctoral Researcher and Postdoctoral Researcher for a fixed term period of up to 3 years 9 months (Doctoral Researcher) and up to 2 years (Postdoctoral Researcher). The positions are part of the Research Council of Finland funded research project Becomings: Temporalities, Solidarities and Social Class in Antiracism  (2025-2028). The positions start 1.4.2025 or as agreed.

About the positions

The project examines notions of temporality and the creation of political solidarities in antiracist mobilisations and narratives. The research team will investigate coalitional politics and community-building practices in the Nordic welfare state context, as its caring functions are eroded and struggles over economic survival intensify. The Doctoral Researcher and Postdoctoral Researcher to be employed will participate in the collection and analysis of the project materials (interviews, ethnography, texts, and visual materials), together with the project leader and another Postdoctoral Researcher.

The Doctoral Researcher will conduct their thesis on basis of the empirical materials collected in the project, with a thematic focus on generations of antiracism, social class, and political solidarity. The Doctoral Researcher will participate in the collection and analysis of the empirical materials, scientific publishing, organisation of project events and communication. The successful candidate should apply to the Doctoral Programme in Social Sciences in April 2025 and obtain the study right within the trial period of six months of their employment contract (if they do not yet have the study right).

The Postdoctoral Researcher will participate in the collection and analysis of the project’s empirical materials, write scientific publications individually and jointly, and organise project activities and events. The Postdoctoral Researcher may also conduct their own sub-project within the outline of the project plan.

The tasks of the Doctoral Researcher and Postdoctoral Researcher also include contributing to teaching (up to 5 % of their working time annually).

Qualifications

The Doctoral Researcher must hold a Master’s degree in sociology or other relevant discipline and have sufficient knowledge or be interested in acquiring sufficient knowledge in questions of antiracism. In addition, the candidate is expected to obtain the study right in the Doctoral Programme within the trial period of six months of their employment contract. The applicants’ skills and motivation to complete a doctoral degree are evaluated on basis of application documents and interview.

The Postdoctoral Researcher must hold a doctoral degree in a relevant discipline and be experienced in research on migration and racism. The default assumption is that the degree requirement must be met by the beginning of the employment. In case the applicant’s doctoral thesis is not located within the research field of migration and racism, experience in this field can be shown by, for example, other scientific publications or participation in research projects.

The Doctoral Researcher and Postdoctoral Researcher need to have adequate language skills for their research topic. Working at the university requires strong communication and academic writing skills in English.
