University of Turku, Department of Computing has 1-4 open positions for doctoral candidate or project researcher positions, or secondarily, research assistants in the fields of cyber secure smart environments and autonomous systems. The start date can be as early as 1.7.2021 but it can be negotiated.All positions are fixed-term. Doctoral candidate / project researcher positions end on 31.12.2022.
The positions are for the ENACT and AutoMARE projects. In the ENACT project, a collaboration network between Finnish universities is built for research and education in automated and connected transport for sustainable cities. In the AutoMARE project, a collaboration network between Finnish universities is built for research and education in cyber secure autonomous maritime operations. Both projects aim to bring the experts in the participating universities together to form substantial educational and research collaborations in the topics. Both projects end on 31.12.2022.
In the positions, scientific research is carried out in the topics of the projects according to project goals in cyber security, smart environments and autonomous systems. In addition to performing research, the selected researchers are expected to contribute to authoring publication manuscripts based on the obtained research results. The selected researchers will also participate in teaching activities associated with the projects and perform coordination duties and tasks in the projects. In addition, they will participate in other duties in the Communication and Cyber Security Engineering cost center, for example, supervising theses and laboratory exercises.
We are looking for outstanding candidates with ability to independent work, analytical capabilities, shown success in academic studies, good collaboration skills and motivation for working in a multidisciplinary environment. An ideal candidate has existing expertise in cyber security, smart environments and/or autonomous systems (for example in the form of a Master’s degree or Master’s thesis, and/or publications in the discipline in question). An approved research plan and enrollment as a PhD candidate in the University of Turku are considered as advantages for the applicant. The positions require fluent communication skills (written and spoken) in English. Fluent communication skills (written and spoken) in Finnish are considered as advantages. Previous experience, for example, in the form of occupational experience or pastime activities, is considered an advantage. Also interest in the research in one of the target fields considered an advantage.

A person selected for the post of doctoral candidate/project researcher is required to have a higher university degree (Master’s degree). The degree must be completed by the end of the application period. A doctoral candidate must also have an accepted research plan. In addition, when acquiring his or her degree or otherwise, he or she is required to have demonstrated the ability and motivation to undertake postgraduate studies and the capacity to complete a doctoral degree in accordance with the research plan.
The salary for a doctoral candidate/project researcher is based on levels 2-4 of the demands level chart for teaching and research staff in the salary system applied at Finnish universities, according to which the base salary for the position is 2078,27–2591,28 euros per month. In addition, a performance-based salary component of min 6% and max 50 % will be paid.
A six (6) month trial period applies to the position.
We are primarily searching for candidate(s) for the project researcher and/or PhD candidate position(s). If suitable persons cannot be found, we may also consider candidate(s) who have more or less completed all their coursework for the Master of Science degree in a suitable field and are ready to start their Master’s thesis in a topic within the boundaries of the projects in question. In this case, the job title will be research assistant. If research assistants are hired, the fixed term of six months applies at the most and the detailed job description will be discussed at the time of making the contract and defining the Master’s thesis topic. The selected candidate must hold an active study right at the University of Turku. For a research assistant, the salary is at the level 1 on the demands level chart, where the task specific salary component is 1889,69 euro per month. In addition, a personal work performance component will be paid. The personal performance component is a 6% – 50% of the task-specific base salary.
