Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management at University of Copenhagen is offering two PhD fellowships in the constrains of oxygen in enzymatic plant cell wall decomposition, commencing the 1 June 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Description of the scientific environment
The PhDs project are integral part of the OxyMiST project funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation. This is an international project led by Section for Forest, Nature and Biomass, at the Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management (http://ign.ku.dk/english/research/forest-nature-biomass/). OxyMiST is a collaborative project with Department of Biochemistry at Cambridge University, UK, and INRAE in Marseille, France. The successful applicants will thus join a vibrant international research environment.
Oxygen is essential to the life that we can see, but what happens deep in environmental niches where oxygen is a scarce resource? The OxyMiST project aims to expand our understanding of oxygen constrained life, and will do so from analysis of microorganism communities and characterisation of their enzyme secretomes. The successful applicants for these PhD fellowships will work closely together with senior and junior scientists who are deeply engaged in the research field.
We are seeking two motivated and creative candidates who display enthusiasm and good interpersonal and communication skills. Candidates with documented knowledge on analytical chemistry, molecular biology, biochemistry, HPLC, GC-MS, LC-MS, and enzyme activity assays are preferred. Further, applicants with documented experience in completing a scientific manuscript will be prioritized

The position is available for a 3-year period and your key tasks as a PhD student are:
- to independently design and execute experiments and manage data analysis,
- to record experimental results in a professional manner,
- to attend and pass PhD courses,
- to draft and submit research articles, as the primary author, to peer-reviewed journals,
- to write and submit a high-quality PhD thesis,
- to teach BSc and MSc students in courses and supervise in research laboratories,
- to disseminate the research results at conferences and workshops,
- to stay at an external research institution for a few months, preferably abroad,
- to execute GLP and ensure safety,
- to contribute to the maintenance of shared instruments,
- to participate in departmental, section and research group activities.
Applicants should hold an MSc degree in biochemistry, molecular biology, microbiology or plant biology, and should be fluent in both spoken and written English.
Terms of employment
The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.
Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.
The starting salary is currently at a minimum DKK 330,817 (approx. €44,108) including annual supplement (+ pension at a minimum DKK 53,761). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
