Computational Modeling of the Perceptual Consequences of Individual Hearing Loss

The Hearing Systems Section at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) seeks a qualified candidate for a 3-year PhD position. Hearing Systems is part of the department of Health Technology. Our research is concerned with auditory signal processing and perception, speech communication, audiology, behavioural and objective measures of auditory function, computational auditory neuroscience, environmental acoustics, and hearing-instrument signal processing. The goal of this research is to understand the functioning of the human auditory system and to provide insights that are useful for technical applications, such as speech recognition systems, hearing aids, cochlear implants, and hearing diagnostics.

The current project will focus on modeling the individual consequences of hearing impairment. This will be achieved with a ‘model-in-the-loop’ framework to investigate and predict the benefit of aided hearing as a function of a given listener’s ‘auditory profile’. The profiles will be constructed based on a robust data-driven analysis that attempts to represent auditory phenomena that are usually hidden by, or entangled with, audibility loss. The model-in-the-loop concept will be used to systematically compare unaided and aided performance using a specific combination and configuration of example hearing-aid algorithms (such as multi-channel compression, noise suppression, beamforming, frequency compression, frequency transposition). By iteratively maximizing the performance on the list of critical outcome measures, it will be possible to tailor the hearing-aid signal processing to the specific needs corresponding to a given auditory profile. The model-based analysis and optimization will be conducted in a systematic fashion as a function of the scene complexity (e.g. number of sources, amount of reverberation, etc.). Overall, the development of the model-in-the-loop framework is expected to pave the way to individualized compensation strategies, and help identify which classes of algorithms are best suited for a given scene type and auditory profile.

The project is part of the Centre for Applied Hearing Research (CAHR) supported by Oticon, WSA and GN Hearing. This PhD project represents one of three CAHR research streams with a variety of connection points which are intended to foster collaborations and common subprojects across the three research streams. 

Responsibilities and qualifications
You will work with behavioural and physiological measures to evaluate the consequences of hearing loss on the processing of simple and complex sounds, including speech. You will work with computational models of auditory signal processing and perception. You will also explore effects of hearing-aid signal processing strategies on both behavioural and outcome measures and evoked potential patterns.

You should be well-versed in some scientific programming environment (MATLAB, Octave, SciPy) and should have knowledge of signal processing and experimental design.

You must have a two-year master’s degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master’s degree.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
