Applications are invited for a PhD scholarship at the Department of Psychology, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Copenhagen as part of the “Common Factors, Responsiveness and Outcome of Psychotherapy (CROP)” study. CROP is funded by the Tryg Foundation, the Health Foundation, the Research Council of the Danish Practice Sector, the Danish Psychological Association, and the Department of Psychology, University of Copenhagen.

CROP investigates the process and outcome of psychotherapy delivered by psychologists in the Danish practice sector or in private practice. The study focuses on two main questions. First, how are specific characteristics of clients and psychologists related to the outcome of therapy and do these characteristics moderate the outcome of different psychotherapeutic approaches? Second, to what extent do therapists adapt their approach to client characteristics and preferences and how does such responsiveness to clients impact the process and outcome of therapy? The study aims to collect data from 100 psychologists with, in total, 1,000 clients through an automated online platform. Data collection is ongoing and is expected to continue until August 2022.
The PhD student will focus on the first research question and is expected to investigate specifically a) how client, psychologist and treatment characteristics are related to the clients’ outcome of psychotherapy and b) whether different outcome trajectories and predictors of these trajectories can be identified in the data collected for the study. Data will be analyzed through quantitative methods, including multilevel and growth mixture modeling. The principal investigator of the project and the PhD supervisor is Stig Poulsen, Professor of Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy at the Department of Psychology. Employment of the PhD student preferably starts in September 2021 or shortly thereafter.
Applicants should have studied Psychology or a closely related subject at undergraduate level. There is a preference for a student with a master’s degree though this is not strictly compulsory. Experience with quantitative methods is a requirement.
The chosen candidate will be enrolled at the Faculty of Social Sciences under Copenhagen Graduate School of Social Sciences.
The PhD programme provides PhD students with strong research training, which opens up a window of opportunity to a variety of careers within the academic, private and public sectors. The programme includes the drafting of a PhD thesis, active participation in research networks, PhD courses, teaching, and other forms of knowledge dissemination.
The positions are available for a 3-year (for applicants with a master degree) or a 4-year (for applicants with four years of course work). The tasks of the PhD student are to:
- Participate in and contribute to the ongoing data collection
- Participate in the regular meetings in the research team
- Write and co-author scientific articles and other scientific outputs to be included in the PhD thesis
- Attend and complete PhD courses in accordance with the PhD program in Social Science
- Participate in and co-organize workshops/seminars/conferences
- Teach in the degree programme at the Department of Psychology
- Visit a research institution abroad for a minimum of two months (pending Covid-19 restrictions)

The 5+3 PhD study programme
In order to be eligible for a scholarship in the 5+3 PhD study programme, the applicant must have completed a two-year MSc degree programme or have earned 120 ECTS credits at an equivalent academic level before starting his or her employment. Applicants should check the study programmes for more detailed descriptions of the entry requirements. PhD students are paid a salary in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC). The salary range starts at DKK 27,788.69 per month + a 17,1 % contribution to the pension scheme. The PhD student has a work obligation of up to 840 hours over the 3 year period of time without additional pay. The work obligation can include for instance teaching.
The 4+4 PhD study programme
Students who have completed a BSc plus 60 ECTS of an MSc degree programme would enrol as PhD students simultaneously with their enrolment in the MSc degree programme. Applicants should check the study programmes for more detailed descriptions of the entry requirements. Until an MSc degree is obtained, the grant is paid partly in the form of up to 48 state education grant portions (in Danish: SU-klip). This SU salary amounts to about DKK 12,000 per month. More specifically, the PhD student will be paid two grant portions per month plus salary for work (teaching, presentations etc.) which totals a workload of at least 280 hours. Payment and conditions of employment are carried out in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC). Upon completion of the MSc degree the student is transferred to the salary-earning part of the PhD studies.
