Job description

We are pleased to invite applications for a full-time, fully-funded 4-year PhD fellowship at Ghent University. The successful candidate will work on the BOF-funded project “Buddhism, Medicine, and Gender in Premodern Japan,” supervised by Dr. Anna Andreeva at the Department of Languages and Cultures, at Ghent University. The candidate will be expected to complete her/his PhD, with yearly evaluations, on a topic relating to the interactions between gendered religious, medical, or technical knowledge and/or the impacts of such knowledge on the fields of cultural production in pre-1900 Japan. An ability to read Buddhist sources is strongly recommended.
Please note that we are an international team and the language of the project and the dissertation is English; Dutch language skills can be taken into account as an extra, although not expected. The post will be tenable from Oct 1, 2021 (or as soon as possible thereafter) for four years, with a monthly net bursary of minimum ca. 2.225,51 Euro (depending on years of prior employment) and a fixed annual bench fee (subject to budget verification, covering some pre-approved expenses for fieldwork, research material, conference travel).

Required:

  • MA degree in Japanese Studies and/or Japanese History
  • Strong motivation to complete the PhD track and curriculum
  • Excellent modern and pre-modern Japanese language skills (kanbun and bungo)
  • Excellent written and spoken English
  • Ability to work in a team

Desirable:

  • Background or demonstrated interest in medieval and early modern Japanese history and religions
  • Dutch language skills
