Avian song learning

项目介绍

The Department of Zoology consists of five divisions: Ecology, Ethology, Functional Morphology, Population Genetics, and Systematics and Evolution. At present the department accommodates 45–50 staff and a similar number of PhD students. The advertised position will be part of the Division of Ethology. There is a long-standing tradition for researchers at the Division of Ethology to collaborate with researchers from other fields, such as evolutionary ecology, theoretical evolutionary biology, and the study of cultural evolution.

Project description
A PhD student position focused on song learning in birds is available in David Wheatcroft’s research group in the Department of Zoology at Stockholm University. The overall aim of the project is to disentangle the roles of early life experience and genetics in song learning. Among other topics, the project could focus on mechanisms of early song responses, the ways in which early life condition influences the development of subsequent physiological and behavioral traits, including song, and/or neurogenomics of auditory-vocal development. A significant portion of the research would be conducted on captive-reared pied flycatchers (Ficedula hypoleuca) as well as on a natural population of pied flycatchers.

Qualification requirements
In order to meet the general entry requirements, the applicant must have completed a second-cycle degree, completed courses equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits, of which 60 credits must be in the second cycle, or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere.

In order to meet the specific entry requirements, the general syllabus for doctoral studies in ethology, the applicant must have completed at least 120 credits in biology and achieved a passing result on an independent project of at least 30 credits at the advanced level. The specific entry requirements can also be met by those who have acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere.

For UK education systems, general and specific entry requirements are typically equivalent to an MBiolSci or equivalent (4 year undergraduate degree with the last year having at least half the credits associated with a research project and associated write up) or an MSc. For US education systems, this is typically the equivalent of an MSc, although you may be eligible to start before you defend your masters. If you are uncertain about whether your qualifications met the entry requirements, you should still apply and we will determine whether you are eligible.

The qualification requirements must be met by the deadline for applications.

Selection
The selection among the eligible candidates will be based on their capacity to benefit from the training. The following criteria will be used to assess this capacity: the candidates’ documented knowledge in a relevant field of research, written and oral proficiency in English, the capacity for analytical thinking, the ability to collaborate, as well as creativity, initiative, and independence. The assessment will be based on previous experience and grades, the quality of the degree project, references, relevant experience, interviews, and the candidate’s written motivation for seeking the position.
