Prerequisites
Applicants for a doctoral degree in these areas must have a good first degree in a relevant subject area and a master’s degree, normally at distinction standard. Candidates must also achieve the higher College requirement in the appropriate English language qualification.
Application
Prospective students must contact a potential supervisor before making a formal application and you should not proceed to a formal application without the agreement of the prospective supervisor. The application must include an outline proposal of the research area or topic you wish to pursue. This should be around 500 words in length and should indicate the treatment of research intended and the source of the materials to be used. Shortlisted candidates will be asked to attend an interview.
Research Facilities
Through the Sconol Access Scheme, a postgraduate student of Imperial College has access to the libraries of the Federal University of London. He or she may, for instance, use without charge the extensive Library of the former Institute of Germanic Studies (School of Advanced Study, University of London), now held in the Senate House Library, University of London, that of the School of Slavonic Studies at University College London, the Spanish history holdings of the Library of King’s College London or of the London School of Economics and Political Science and the Translation Studies holdings at University College, London. Furthermore, the world-famous British Library is only a short journey away from the South Kensington campus of Imperial College where the Centre for Languages, Culture and Communication is situated.

For those who wish to improve their command of a foreign language or to embark on a new one, day and evening classes at all levels from beginners to advanced are available within the college. The languages offered are Arabic, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Japanese, Korean and Mandarin Chinese.
