The Laboratory of Organic Electronics (LOE, www.liu.se/LOE) is a vibrant, international and collaborative research environment of around 150 researchers. We study conducting organic materials and hybrid materials, and their use in an array of areas spanning energy harvesting, printed electronics, photonics, and bioelectronics.

The PhD student position will join the Organic photonics and Nanooptics group at LOE (www.mpjonsson.com), under supervision of Prof. Magnus Jonsson. Recent interests of the group include wood-based optics and metamaterials, organic tunable nanooptics, and plasmonic displays. The PhD student will join our exciting research efforts on nanooptics based on conducting polymers (see https://www.nature.com/articles/s41565-019-0583-y and https://arxiv.org/abs/2108.04045).

We now have an opening for a PhD Student in Applied Physics to join the Organic Photonics and Nanooptics group at the Laboratory of Organic Electronics at our department.

Your work assignments
The planned research will focus on nanooptical systems based on organic nanostructures. The experimental work of the PhD student will include polymerisation of conducting polymer thin films, nanofabrication and device fabrication in cleanroom environments, and various ways to characterize and study the produced systems. Theory and modelling may be used to complement the experimental work.

As a PhD student, you will devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.

Your qualificationsAt the time of starting the position, you need to have graduated at Master’s level or completed courses with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 60 of which must be in advanced courses in physics, materials science or other relevant fields. Alternatively, you have gained essentially corresponding knowledge in another way.

We seek applicants with strong interest in, and preferably experience of, the relevant fields of the proposed research, primarily nanooptics (plasmonics, metasurfaces, etc.), conducting polymers and organic electronics. Experience in micro- and nanofabrication, measurement methods, optical modeling (e.g. FDTD and FEM methods) etc. are meritorious. We also value qualities such as strong ability to communicate and collaborate, good ability to express yourself in oral and written English, analytical ability, motivation and commitment. 

Terms of employmentWhen taking up the position, you will be admitted to the programme for doctoral studies in Applied Physics at the Faculty of Science and Engineering. More information about the doctoral studies at each faculty is available by weblink Doctoral studies at Linköping University.

The employment has a duration of four years’ full-time equivalent. You will initially be employed for a period of one year. The employment will subsequently be renewed for periods of maximum duration two years, depending on your progress through the study plan. The employment may be extended up to a maximum of five years, based on the amount of teaching and departmental duties you have carried out. Further extensions can be granted in special circumstances.
