The Complex Materials group is headed by Prof. André R. Studart and was established in 2009. Our research focuses on the creation of complex composite materials and the understanding of how their structures and properties correlate at different length scales.
Using self- and directed assembly methods, we are particularly interested in creating artificial composites that resemble biological materials and incorporate some of their remarkable structures and functions.
Additive manufacturing of soft, functional and multi-material objects is a rapidly growing area of research, particularly within the fields of personalized wearable electronics and human-computer interaction devices. The need for compliant active wearables is clear: from assistive devices for rehabilitation, soft exoskeletons to extend active lifestyles, and wearable haptic or active touch-feedback devices for teleoperation or immersive VR gaming.
The project will develop scalable additive manufacturing (AM) processes for soft actuators that are directly integrated in an elastomer exoskeleton. The main output will be a digitally manufactured soft glove, making virtual objects feel real.
This project is part of a collaboration between the groups of Complex Materials (ETH), LMTS: Soft Transducers Lab (EPFL), Functional Polymeric Materials (EMPA) and Soft Materials (ETH).
To develop and investigate complex additive manufacturing approaches to generate customized soft composite wearables, printed electronics and integration of artificial muscle structures. The project will involve the investigation of material formulations to create breathable structures, programmed active exoskeletons and hard-soft material interfaces using multi-axis 3D printer systems.
We are looking for a highly motivated materials scientist, engineer or physicist who would like to apply her/his technical background to the investigation of novel additive manufacturing processes and materials for wearable artificial muscles.
Although this is not a mandatory requirement, preference will be given to candidates with previous experience within the field of additive manufacturing, robotics or printed electronics.
