Postdoctoral Research Fellow position (3 years), Centre for Cancer Biomarkers (CCBIO), Department of Clinical Medicine

At the Faculty of Medicine, Centre for Cancer Biomarkers, Department of Clinical Medicine, a full-time (100 %) position as postdoctoral research fellow is available for a period of three (3) years. The position is part of the project ”Cancer-neuron synapses and behavior of breast cancer”, financed by Norwegian Cancer Society and the Norwegian Breast Cancer Society, Pink Ribbon.

About the project/work tasks:

• This project investigates and maps functional interactions between peripheral nerves and breast cancer cells by combining advanced tissue studies with experimental cell models.
• The postdoctoral researcher will work with human co-culture models based on stem cell-derived neurons and breast cancer organoids, together with clinical tissue material, to investigate cancer-nerve contact sites using multiplexed immunofluorescence, single-cell and single-nucleus transcriptomics and proteomic profiling.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

• The applicant must hold a Norwegian PhD or an equivalent degree within neurobiology/ tumor biology, or equivalent in a relevant field of research or have the doctoral thesis submitted prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded at the latest within 5 months after the closing date for applications.
• Documented hands-on experience with isolation, quality assessment and preparation of single-cell and/or nuclei suspensions from complex biological material for downstream single-cell or single-nucleus transcriptomics profiling is required. 
• Practical experience generating single-cell or single-nucleus RNA-sequencing data using 10x Genomics or equivalent platforms, including sample quality control and library preparation is required.
• The applicant must have strong independent bioinformatics and programming skills in R, Python or equivalent. The applicant must be able to perform end-to-end analysis of single-cell and/or single-nucleus RNA-sequencing datasets. This includes quality control, normalization, dimensionality reduction, clustering, cell-type annotation, differential expression, data integration, visualization and biological interpretation.
• Good oral and written English skills are required, together with documented record of scientific publications.

The following qualifications are highly desirable:

• Experience with neuronal cell cultures, stem cell-derived neuronal populations, tumor innervation, synapses or neurobiology. 
• Experience with spatial molecular profiling, including spatial transcriptomics or proteomics, multiplexed imaging and/or integration of spatial transcriptomics with single-cell RNA-sequencing datasets.

Experience from relevant research projects will be considered an advantage.

Qualities of particular importance for the position:

We are seeking an independent and structured researcher with the ability to plan, conduct, and complete complex research tasks. The applicant must demonstrate strong collaborative skills, an interest in supervising students, and a commitment to support an inclusive and productive research environment. Furthermore, the applicant must be able to combine practical laboratory work with quantitative data analysis.

About the position of postdoctoral research fellow:

The position of postdoctoral research fellow is a fixed-term appointment with the primary objective of qualifying the appointee for work in top academic positions. You cannot be employed as a postdoctoral fellow for more than  one fixed term period at the same institution. 

The employee may be assigned required duties in the form of teaching and similar work at the department.

Upon appointment, applicants must submit a project proposal for the qualifying work including a work schedule. For postdoctoral research fellow positions associated with externally financed projects, the completion of the project proposal for the qualifying work will take place in consultation with the project/centre manager. It is a requirement that the project is completed in the course of the period of employment.
