Postdoctoral Research Fellow position

We welcome your application for a postdoctoral research fellow position within critical studies/political economy of AI at SLATE, Faculty of Psychology. The position is for a fixed-term period of 3 years and is associated with the AI LEARN centre.

AI LEARN

AI LEARN is a new national interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral initiative. The centre aims to understand and shape the human aspects of interaction with and through the use of AI. The goal is to ensure the sustainable, inclusive and responsible integration of AI in both the public and private sectors, to strengthen human agency, and to help everyone participate safely and critically in a society characterised by AI. AI LEARN is a consortium consisting of 33 national and international partners from academia and the public and private sectors.

Six national research centres for Artificial Intelligence were launched in the fall of 2025. These centres will foster interdisciplinary collaboration among researchers to address societal challenges, understand the impact of AI, develop new technologies, and drive innovation across both the business and public sectors. This initiative is established and financed through the government’s significant investment in artificial intelligence over the next five years (regjeringen.no) (in Norwegian)

About the project/work tasks:

This position is linked to the AI LEARN cluster of Ethics, Governance and Regulation. The position offers the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research at the intersection of the reconfigurations, practices, networks, and/or collaborations in human-AI constellations in the service of democracy and human rights.

The workplace is Bergen, Norway.

Work tasks:

• Investigate the shifting dynamics of power, human agency and flourishing in current, emerging and future forms of AI systems, embedded in relational and socio-political constituted processes in the context of human learning.
• Conduct qualitative empirical research grounded in critical theory and the political economy of technology, to inform ethical frameworks (or similar), governance, policy, and/or professional development in learning contexts, with particular attention to the conditions for individual and collective agency.
• Disseminate research outcomes and participate in the public discourse through a variety of means e.g. opinion pieces, scholarly articles, conference papers, blog posts, etc.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

You must:

• hold a relevant doctoral degree in any of (or combinations of) the following disciplinary fields: sociology, political science, education, science and technology studies (STS), media studies or other possible relevant other fields, or have submitted your doctoral thesis for evaluation before the application deadline. It is a prerequisite that the doctoral degree is obtained before employment can commence.
• have evidence of sustained engagement with the social, political, and ethical dimensions of AI in learning, drawing on critical theory, philosophy, or historical-materialist approaches, and have demonstrated the ability to translate conceptual frameworks into governance tools, policy analysis, or participatory design strategies in learning contexts.
• work independently and in a structured manner, and have the ability to cooperate with others
• be able to work in interdisciplinary teams
• have proficiency in both written and oral English

About the position of postdoctoral research fellow:

The position of postdoctoral research fellow is a fixed-term appointment with the primary objective of developing your research profile and expertise so that you can apply for a position as Associate Professor. The fixed-term period for this position is 3 years. Individuals may not be hired for more than one fixed-term period as a postdoctoral research fellow at the same institution.

Upon appointment, applicants must submit a project proposal for the qualifying work including a work schedule. For postdoctoral research fellow positions associated with externally financed projects, the completion of the project proposal for the qualifying work will take place in consultation with the project/centre manager. It is a requirement that the project is completed in the course of the period of employment.

• Salary as a postdoctoral research fellow (code 1352) in the state salary scale. This currently amounts to an annual salary of NOK 685 900 before taxes. Further salary increases are made according to the length of service in the position. For particularly highly qualified applicants, a higher salary may be considered.
