Description of the workplace

The doctoral project will be part of the multidisciplinary research environment within MIPCART and the systemic radionuclide therapy activities at the Division of Oncology, Department of Clinical Sciences, Lund University.

This interdisciplinary composition enables studies ranging from the development and preclinical evaluation of radiopharmaceuticals to biological characterization, quantitative image analysis, and assessment of treatment response.

Description of PhD Project
The research focuses on the clinical and preclinical development of radionuclide therapy and advanced imaging methodologies, with particular emphasis on prostate cancer and other aggressive malignancies. The research group consists of researchers with complementary expertise in molecular biology, oncology, medical radiation physics, radionuclide therapy, radiochemistry, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), radiation dosimetry, and image analysis.

Work description
As a doctoral student, your primary responsibility will be to pursue third-cycle education through research projects aimed at developing and optimizing radionuclide therapy for prostate cancer and other malignancies.

The doctoral training is carried out through participation in the various components of the projects, enabling the student to progressively acquire knowledge in scientific methodology, experimental research, data analysis, and scientific communication.

As part of your doctoral studies, your duties will include:

  • Participating in the planning and execution of preclinical studies of targeted radiopharmaceuticals.
  • Working with experimental tumor models, including cell culture, establishment of tumor models, and monitoring and care of laboratory animals.
  • Performing biological sample collection and contributing to histological and immunohistochemical analyses of biological markers.
  • Analyzing microscopy images and other biological data.
  • Analyzing and visualizing collected data using appropriate statistical methods and relevant software.
  • Conducting literature reviews and completing doctoral-level coursework.
  • Presenting research findings at seminars and scientific conferences.
  • Writing scientific publications and a doctoral thesis.

Following introduction and training, the PhD student is expected to gradually assume increasing responsibility for project planning, experimental execution, data analysis, and scientific reporting.

Additional duties related to the position may be assigned.

QualificationsRequired Qualifications;

  • A second-cycle degree (Master’s level) in Molecular Biology, Biomedicine, or another closely related field considered relevant to doctoral studies.
  • Knowledge of cell and molecular biology, tumor biology, or a related area within molecular biology.
  • Experience in molecular biology laboratory work.
  • The ability and willingness to work with laboratory animals following the necessary training.
  • Excellent written and spoken English communication skills.
  • Good collaborative skills, particularly in interdisciplinary environments.

Meritorious Qualifications are:

  • Advanced courses in cancer biology, immunology, histology, pathology, molecular imaging, or radiation biology.
  • Training in laboratory animal science or equivalent certification for animal research.
  • Experience with preclinical prostate cancer models or other animal-based research.
  • Experience in histological sample preparation, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, microscopy, or related image analysis.
  • Experience in working with ionizing radiation, such as handling open radiation sources or radioactive tissue samples.
  • Knowledge of cancer biology, radionuclide therapy, radiation biology, or molecular imaging.

EligibilityStudents with basic eligibility for third-cycle studies are those who- have completed a second-cycle degree- have completed courses of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits are from second-cycle courses, or- have acquired largely equivalent knowledge in some other way, in Sweden or abroad. The employment of doctoral students is regulated in the Swedish Code of Statues 1998: 80. Only those who are or have been admitted to PhD-studies may be appointed to doctoral studentships. When an appointment to a doctoral studentship is made, the ability of the student to benefit from PhD-studies shall primarily be taken into account. In addition to devoting themselves to their studies, those appointed to doctoral studentships may be required to work with educational tasks, research and administration, in accordance with specific regulations in the ordinance.

Type of employment
