Electrification and digitalisation are among the major areas for the future transition to sustainable societies. The Department of Electrical Engineering conducts successful research and education in these areas – including renewable energy sources, electric vehicles, industrial IoT, 6G communication, and wireless sensor networks, as well as research and education in Life Science, health technology, smart electronic sensors, and medical systems. The Department of Electrical Engineering is an international environment with around 160 employees who contribute to important technological energy and health at the Ångström Laboratory.

Project description
Large dependencies of reliable power production from offshore renewable energy systems (RES) is expected in the next decades, in particular onshore and offshore wind and solar PV. Large changes are also seen in energy and electricity supply from non-renewable sources, due to, e.g., recent national policy changes around nuclear power or imported gas and oil. The demand side is transforming as well, driven by changes such as the electrification of transportation and other sectors, and increased use of heat pumps or air conditioning.
Finally, climate change is implying changes in weather, with heat waves and other weather extremes affecting society and the energy system. There are large knowledge gaps regarding the power production reliability under severe weather conditions and transforming energy systems. In this project, the student will investigate the security of electricity supply in the European power system in current and future projected scenarios considering transformations in the energy production, energy consumption, and climate.
The project is part of the Centre for Natural Disaster Science (CNDS), a national research centre that aims to prevent and improve society’s preparedness for risks by increasing knowledge of the dynamics and consequences of natural disasters. Cooperation and communication within the CNDS network provide an interdisciplinary platform for exchanging expertise in natural disasters and risk reduction.
The research group at Uppsala University has extensive experience of research in electrical engineering and has a large laboratory activity. We offer a varied and exciting work, planned by the doctoral student and the research group together. The doctoral student will be supervised by at least two supervisors.
Duties
The main task for a doctoral student is to devote themselves to their doctoral education, which includes both participation in research projects and doctoral education courses.
Teaching and other departmental duties may be part of the position, to a maximum of 20% of the working hours.
Qualifications required
To meet the entry requirements for doctoral studies, you must
- hold a Master’s (second-cycle) degree in electrical engineering, energy systems engineering, engineering physics or similar, or
- have completed at least 240 credits in higher education with at least 60 credits at Master’s level including an independent project worth at least 15 credits, or
- have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way.
Specify other skills, competencies, and qualities that are required for the position.
We place great emphasis on personal qualities such as strong motivation, good collaboration and communication skills with other researchers. You should be purposeful, structured and be able to work effectively both individually and in groups.
The candidate must have excellent communication skills in English and/or Swedish, both orally and in writing.
Qualifications desired
Good oral and written proficiencies in Swedish is a merit. Experience in numerical modelling and programming as well as experimental work is a merit Experience from industry is a merit
About the employment
Fixed term position 48 months, in accordance with Chapter 5, Section 7 of the Higher Education Ordinance. Full-time. Start date as agreed. Location: Uppsala.
