The Department of Teaching and Learning has approximately 280 employees. The Division of Science Education comprises 26 members of staff: five professors, eight senior researchers, six university lecturers, and seven doctoral students. Research conducted within the division spans all levels of the education system, with a primary focus on contributing to the development of teaching and learning.

The research addresses, among other things, issues related to the nature of science and scientific practices; sustainable development and citizenship education; identity formation; interest, aesthetics and aesthetic activities; sexuality, consent and relationships; multilingual classrooms; and extramural learning environments such as museums. Researchers and doctoral students within the division employ a range of data-generation methods, including interviews, classroom observations, questionnaires, and text analysis. The research also involves the design of teaching and learning and is often carried out in close collaboration with preschool and school teachers.

Project description

We welcome applications within the research field of science education. The project may focus on the natural sciences in compulsory and upper secondary school or higher education in the natural sciences. Applications addressing preschool, after-school care, and informal learning environments are also welcome.

Qualification requirements

In order to be admitted to postgraduate education, the applicant must meet the general and specific entry requirements. The qualification requirements must be met by the deadline for applications.

You meet general entry requirements if you have completed a second-cycle degree, or completed courses equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits, of which 60 credits must be in the second cycle, or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere.

The higher education institution may, for an individual applicant, grant an exemption from the requirement of general eligibility if there are special grounds (Chapter 7, Section 39 of the Higher Education Ordinance). Decisions on exemptions are made by the Dean following a request from the departmental board.

You meet specific entry requirements for doctoral studies in Science Education, with a focus on Science Education in pre, primary or secondary school, if you have completed Teacher Education qualifying you to teach science in the relevant school form, including a degree project of at least 15 ECTS credits in the field of Science Education.

You meet specific entry requirements for doctoral studies in Science Education, with a focus on higher education in biology, physics, geoscience, chemistry or equivalent, you must have passed courses totaling 180 ECTS credits at first-cycle level in the relevant subject area, including a degree project of at least 15 ECTS credits. In addition, 30 ECTS credits at second-cycle level in science education are required, including a degree project of at least 15 ECTS credits.

The entry requirements may also be met by those who have otherwise acquired substantially equivalent competence within or outside Sweden.

For specific eligibility, the applicant must have a command of either Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, or English, meaning the ability to read, speak, and write in one of these languages.

Any equivalence assessment of entry requirements is carried out by the department’s Research Committee, and decisions are made by the Departmental Board.

Selection

The selection among the eligible candidates will be based on their capacity to benefit from the training. The following criteria will be used to assess this capacity:

• Documented subject knowledge relevant to the research area. The assessment takes into account both the depth and breadth of prior education.
• Previous scholarly output. The applicant’s ability to benefit from doctoral studies is assessed based on theses from first- and second-cycle studies, and where applicable other written academic work,. Consideration is also given to the time aspect, i.e. the extent to which the applicant has demonstrated the ability to complete previous academic tasks within given timeframes. In addition, the applicant’s scholarly development is assessed through a comparison of their academic outputs over time. The scholarly work is evaluated in terms of critical ability, analytical ability, independence, and creativity.
• Research plan. As part of the application, the applicant must describe their intended research area. This description should include research questions and an outline of how the research will be carried out. The plan is assessed in terms of relevance, scientific quality, and feasibility within the given timeframe (i.e. a four-year full-time doctoral programme).
• Ability to collaborate. The applicant’s ability to work collaboratively is assessed based on, for example, references, certificates, or interviews.
• Ability to communicate in spoken and written English—ability nto communicate in spoken and written Swedish is considered an additional merit. An assessment will also be made with regard to available supervisory capacity. Work samples may be conducted in connection with interviews to demonstrate abilities relevant to doctoral studies.

About the employment

We offer a fixed-term employment as a doctoral student according to Chapter 5 of the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100). The period of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for four years. As a doctoral student, you should primarily devote yourself to your own doctoral education, but the employment may include work with education, research and administration to a limited extent (maximum 20 %).

A new employment as a doctoral student is for a maximum of one year, the employment is then renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.
