Project description

The doctoral student’s thesis work will be conducted within the framework of the doctoral education in mathematics education. The dissertation project focuses on primary and/or secondary school mathematics and how the pupils’ ability to develop statistical literacy, i.e., the ability to read, interpret and draw conclusions from statistical information in different contexts. This focus can be highlighted from different perspectives, such as the students’ own learning and reasoning or teachers’ perceptions of statistics and statistics teaching. Which perspective is in the foreground can be adapted based on the focus and design of the doctoral project. The doctoral project includes both deepening the theoretical knowledge in the research field and contributing with teaching models for teaching statistics in close collaboration with the teaching profession. 

Qualification requirements

In order to be admitted to doctoral studies, the applicant must have general and specific entry requirements. The eligibility must be met by the application deadline.

To meet the general entry requirements for third-cycle studies, the applicant must have: 

  1. Completed a second-cycle degree
  2. Oe completed course requirements of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits are at second-cycle level
  3. Or acquired essentially equivalent knowledge in some other way within or outside the country. 

To meet the specific entry requirements to be admitted to doctoral studies in mathematics education with a focus on school mathematics (preschool, compulsory school and upper secondary school), the applicant must have completed teacher training in mathematics or have passed courses in a subject area of direct relevance to the focus of the programme. Passed courses must correspond to at least 90 credits, as well as at least 30 credits at advanced level in mathematics education, mathematics or similar relevant main field of study, of which at least 15 credits are degree projects.  

The qualification requirements can also be met by a person who has acquired essentially equivalent competence in Sweden or abroad. To qualify for specific entry requirements, the applicant must have mastered either Swedish, Danish, Norwegian or English, i.e. the ability to read, speak and write in Swedish, Danish, Norwegian or English.  

Any corresponding assessment of eligibility is made by the department’s Research Committee and decisions are made by the department board. 

Selection

Selection among the applicants is made with regard to the ability to benefit from third-cycle education. Criteria used to assess this ability are: 

  • Documented subject knowledge relevant to the research area. Assessment is made with regard to both depth and breadth of previous education.  
  • Previous scientific production. On the basis of degree projects from undergraduate and graduate level and, where applicable, other written scientific production, the applicant’s ability to benefit from the education is assessed. The assessment also takes into account the time aspect, i.e. the extent to which the applicant has demonstrated the ability to carry out his or her previous scientific tasks within given time frames. In addition, based on a comparison of the scientific outputs, an assessment is made of the applicant’s scientific development. Scientific output is assessed in terms of critical ability, analytical ability, independence and creativity.  
  • Research plan. In connection with the application, the applicant must describe their intended research area. The report should include a name for the project, problem statement(s) and a sketch of the implementation of the research work and be a maximum of 2000 words (for further instructions see: www.su.se/enheter/institutionen-for-amnesdidaktik/forskning/borja-forska/instructions-for-writing-a-project-description-in-a-phd-application). The plan is assessed with regard to scientific quality, relevance in relation to the project description, feasibility within a given time frame (i.e. during a period corresponding to four years of full-time education).  
  • Available supervisor skills.  
  • Collaboration skills. The applicant’s ability to cooperate is assessed on the basis of e.g. references, certificates or interviews. 
  • The ability to express yourself orally and in writing in English, is also an advantage if you have the ability to express yourself orally and in writing in Swedish.
  • Work samples may be carried out in connection with interviews to demonstrate abilities relevant to the doctoral education

About the employment

We offer a fixed-term employment as a doctoral student according to Chapter 5 of the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100). The period of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for four years. As a doctoral student, you should primarily devote yourself to your own doctoral education, but the employment may include work with education, research and administration to a limited extent (maximum 20 %).

A new employment as a doctoral student is for a maximum of one year, the employment is then renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.
