PhD position
We welcome your application for a PhD research fellow position within the fields of cognitive psychology, psychophysiology, and human-computer interaction at the Department of Psychosocial Science. The position is for a fixed-term period of three years with the possibility of a fourth year with career-promoting work (e.g. teaching duties at the department). The position is planned to start in January/February 2027 and is financed by the University of Bergen.
About the project/work tasks:
- The position is linked to Technology-Enhanced Cognitive Resilience Toolkit for Disinformation Detection, Vulnerability Profiling, and Digital User Empowerment (infoSHIELD), a five-year research project funded by the Research Council of Norway.
- infoSHIELD investigates psychological vulnerability to misinformation and disinformation associated with emerging technologies, with particular attention to AI-generated content.
- The project combines psychological assessment, behavioral experiments, and psychophysiological methods to examine the cognitive and affective processes involved in evaluating misleading information.
- The PhD candidate will design and conduct experimental studies using behavioral and psychophysiological methods, potentially including EEG, skin conductance, or related measures.
- Responsibilities will include participant recruitment, data collection, preprocessing, statistical analysis, interpretation, and research dissemination.
- The candidate will prepare scientific publications, scientific reports, and complete a doctoral thesis within the framework of infoSHIELD.
- The candidate will collaborate with the project’s interdisciplinary and international research partners and participate in relevant project meetings and research activities.
- The workplace is Bergen, Norway. Regular on-site presence is required for laboratory work, participant testing, and collaboration with the local research team.
- The candidate should be internationally oriented and help establishing and maintain scientific collaborations with international research partners. This includes short visits to InfoSHIELD project partners’ laboratories and potentially longer secondment periods.
Qualifications and personal qualities:
You must:
- hold a master’s degree or equivalent in psychology, human-computer interaction, cognitive science, cognitive neuroscience, or another relevant field by the application deadline
- normally have obtained a grade equivalent to B or higher in the Norwegian grading system for the master’s thesis. Applicants who do not meet this requirement may still be considered if permitted under the Faculty’s admission regulations and if they can document exceptional scientific achievement or research potential through peer-reviewed publications, conference contributions, patents, or relevant research experience
- meet the requirements for admission to the PhD programme at the Faculty of Psychology, University of Bergen
- have relevant training or experience in quantitative research methods, experimental design, and statistical analysis
- demonstrate strong scientific motivation and an interest in human-AI interaction, cognitive psychology, or related topics
- be able to work independently and systematically while contributing effectively to collaborative research
- have excellent written and oral English-language skills
- have a good command of Norwegian language or another Scandinavian language
- if currently living outside Bergen area, be willing to relocate to Bergen and maintain a regular on-site presence for laboratory work and project activities
- be willing to undertake research visits at the project’s partner institutions abroad
It is an advantage if you:
- have relevant experience in human-computer interaction, human-AI interaction, misinformation research, or experimental psychology through a master’s thesis, research position, internship, or employment outside academia
- have experience designing and conducting laboratory-based or online behavioral experiments
- have experience collecting or analysing psychophysiological data, such as EEG or skin-conductance data
- have programming and statistical-analysis skills using software such as R, Python, or MATLAB
- have experience with experimental software such as PsychoPy, Psychtoolbox, or PsyToolkit
- have experience developing or validating psychological measures
- have applied open and reproducible research practices, including preregistration, transparent data management, or reproducible analysis workflows
- have contributed to scientific publications, conference proceedings, or research presentations
- have experience working in interdisciplinary or international research environments
Personal suitability, scientific motivation, and research potential will be given considerable weight in the assessment.
The University of Bergen is subjected to the regulation for export control system. The regulation will be applied in the processing of the applications. If the university has not received the assessment from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs within 6-12 weeks after applying for an export license, any offer of employment will be rescinded.

About the PhD position
The duration of the PhD position is 3 years, with the possibility of a fourth year, consisting of 25 % career promoting work (e.g. teaching responsibilities at the department) distributed over the employment period. The fourth year is contingent on your qualifications and the teaching needs of the department and will be decided by the Head of Department upon appointment. You cannot be employed in a PhD-position for more than one fixed term period at the same institution.

As a PhD Candidate, you must participate in an approved educational programme for a PhD degree within a period of 3 years. When your qualification for the position is evaluated, you will also be evaluated for admission to the PhD programme at the Faculty of Psychology.
