PhD position

There is a vacancy for a PhD Research Fellow in multidisciplinary geohazards studies at the Department of Earth Science. The position is for a fixed-term period of 3 years with the possibility of a 4th year with career-promoting work (e.g. teaching at the Department). The position is funded by the University of Bergen. 

About the project/work tasks:

The PhD project will be linked to the EPOS-Norway – Research Infrastructure for Geohazards (EPOS-NG) project. EPOS-NG aims to establish the nation’s go-to research infrastructure for monitoring, analysing, and mitigating growing threats like landslides, tsunamis, earthquakes, and cryosphere hazards, which are increasingly exacerbated by climate change. The research infrastructure will combine pools of scientific instruments with a data portal that provides access to a variety of geoscientific data as well as computational and visualization services.

The PhD project will utilize EPOS-NG infrastructure in multidisciplinary studies of geohazards in Norway. The specific research aims of the project will be developed in cooperation with the selected candidate, depending on their competence and interests. Potential topics that can be addressed include:

• Conditioning factors and trigger mechanisms of Norwegian landslides.
• Systematic mapping and evaluation of cascading natural hazard events in Norway.
• Magnitudes of historical earthquakes in Norway, and their potential to trigger slope failures.
• Paleolandslides in Norway and their linkage to earthquakes and other trigger mechanisms.
• Geophysical monitoring of glacier and permafrost related hazards in high latitude environments.

The selected candidate will be part of the EPOS-NG team and is expected to cooperate with national and international partners within the EPOS framework. Within the framework of the project, the candidate will also contribute to the development and testing of EPOS‑NG instrument pools or portal functionalities and engage in science communication and outreach activities related to geohazards.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

Required qualifications:

• Applicants must hold a master’s degree or equivalent education in earth science, or must have submitted his/her master’s thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the master’s degree has been awarded. 
• Competence in scientific programming (e.g., Python, MATLAB), data handling and/or GIS 
• Competence inone or more natural hazards (e.g., landslides, earthquakes, tsunamis, cryosphere hazards).
• Applicants must have good written and oral English skills.
• Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner and demonstrate good collaborative skills.

Advantageous qualifications:

• Experience from hazard or risk assessment for natural hazards.
• Experience from multidisciplinary work or collaboration across scientific disciplines.
• Experience from scientific data analysis
• Familiarity with data management, data visualization, or web-based portals.
• Norwegian language skills, relevant for communication with stakeholders and public dissemination.

Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized. Research experience, ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates.

Special requirements for the position 

The University of Bergen is subjected to the regulation for export control system. The regulation will be applied in the processing of the applications.

About the PhD Research Fellow position

The fellowship will be for a period of 3 years, with the possibility for a 4th year contingent on the qualifications of the candidate and the teaching needs of the department and will be decided by the head of department upon appointment. If a 4th year is granted, one year of career-promoting work associated with teaching, dissemination or research infrastructure/services, will be distributed over the full employment period and thus corresponding to 25 per cent of the time each year.

The employment period may be reduced if you have previously been employed in a qualifying post (e.g. research fellow, research assistant).

About the research training

As a PhD Research Fellow, you must participate in an approved educational programme for a PhD degree within a period of 3 years. The deadline for applying for admission to the PhD programme at The Faculty of Science and Technology is 2 months after you start your position or after the start of the research project that will lead to the PhD degree. It is a condition that you satisfy the enrolment requirements for the PhD programme at the University of Bergen.

• a brief research plan (1-2 pages), outlining the research you would like to conduct, including how it utilizes EPOS-NG infrastructure.

• approved documentation of proficiency in English (if required, cf. English language requirements for PhD admission)
• a list of any works of a scientific nature (publication list with links)
