PhD Research Fellow in Fluid Mechanics
There is a vacancy for a PhD Research Fellow in fluid mechanics at the Department of Mathematics. The position is for a fixed-term period of 3 years with the possibility of a 4th year with career-promoting work (e.g. teaching at the Department). The position is subject to financing by the ERC starting grant project ‘OceanCoupling’.
About the project
We seek a highly motivated and exceptionally talented PhD research fellow in fluid mechanics to pursue research tasks aiming to develop novel theoretical frameworks for the coupling between multiscale flows involving ocean surface waves, submesoscale current, turbulence, and wind actions. The research aims to derive a highly accurate and efficient theoretical models by extending newly derived theoretical frameworks from the European Research Council – Starting grant ‘OceanCoupling’ project and numerically implement the theoretical models. Interested applicants must address why and how their research background and experience would make them a great fit of the post in the motivation or application letter. The position is expected to be filled in as soon as possible.
Exceptional opportunities are offered by the position, such as to be engaged with experimental partners and external collaborators and attend international conferences and workshops. The project will support research visits and joint activities with research tasks-related collaborators.
About work tasks
The research will involve theoretical works, the development of customized numerical scripts, and numerical simulations for validation and exploring the potential of the outcomes. The research will provide input for other group members, meaning user friendly outcomes and proper documentation of results are expected to be incorporated in daily tasks. A comprehensive training program tailored for implementing relevant research tasks will be provided, particularly including practices following the data management plan from the group. Access to high-performance computing facilities and datasets from laboratory experiments will be provided to support simulation and verification of the resulting model.
- Replicate and learn a theoretical model for wave and current interaction by posing appropriate initial and boundary conditions owing to wind forcing on the ocean surface.
- Extend the new wave and current model to permit steeper waves and small-scale turbulence
- Develop a numerical solver which numerically implements the newly derived theoretical frameworks using fundamental computer programming languages. The numerical solver will leverage existing modules (by then) developed by the project team of ‘OceanCoupling’.
- Develop code scripts using programming languages such as Fortran, Python, and/or MATLAB
- Validate and test of customized scripts and perform numerical simulations.
- Closely collaborative and integrated work with the PI and other team members and report regularly the updates of research progresses.
Qualifications and personal qualities
- Applicants must hold a master’s degree or equivalent education in in fluid mechanics, theoretical physical oceanography, applied mathematics, hydrodynamics, or related fields, or must have submitted his/her master’s thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the master’s degree has been awarded.
- Documented high academic grades in transcripts for relevant courses, such as fluid mechanics, calculus, mathematics, physics, mechanics, or similar, is a requirement.
- Documented experience with developing or numerically implementing a theoretical model in fluid mechanics/theoretical physical oceanography involving surface waves or waves-current interaction is an advantage.
- Developer experience with programming language such as Fortran, Python, C/C++ dealing with physical problems in fluid mechanics is an advantage.
- Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner and have the ability to cooperate with others.
- Applicants must have good written and oral English skills.
Please be aware that user experience with commercial CFD software (such as Fluent) is irrelevant for this position.
Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized. Research experience, ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates.
Special requirements for the position
The University of Bergen is subjected to the regulation for export control system. The regulation will be applied in the processing of the applications.
About the PhD Research Fellow position
About the PhD position: The fellowship will be for a period of 3 years, with the possibility for a 4th year contingent on the qualifications of the candidate and the teaching needs of the department and will be decided by the Head of department upon appointment. If a 4th year is granted, one year of career-promoting work associated with teaching, dissemination or research infrastructure/services, will be distributed over the full employment period and thus corresponding to 25 per cent of the time each year.[YL1]
The employment period may be reduced if you have previously been employed in a qualifying post (e.g. research fellow, research assistant).
About the research training: As a PhD Research Fellow, you must participate in an approved educational programme for a PhD degree within a period of 3 years. The deadline for applying for admission to the PhD programme at The Faculty of Science and Technology is 2 months after you start your position or after the start of the research project that will lead to the PhD degree. It is a condition that you satisfy the enrolment requirements for the PhD programme at the University of Bergen.
