About the position

Are you motivated to take the next step toward a doctoral degree and open the door to exciting career opportunities? The Department of Art and Media Studies announces a PhD research fellowship connected to the PhD programme in Humanities and the Arts. This call does not include the PhD programme in Artistic Research.

Applicants must develop an independent project linked to one of the following research groups at the department:

• The Film Research Group
• AI Media
• Reflexive Dramaturgy
• Media, Data, Museums
• Environmental Humanities
• Socially Engaged Art Research
• Centre for Medieval Studies

The application must explain how the project relates to the relevant research group and to the department’s academic activities. Applicants must contact the relevant research group well before the application deadline and obtain confirmation from a potential main supervisor who is willing to supervise the project. The main supervisor must be employed at the Department of Art and Media Studies and must meet the PhD regulations’ requirements for doctoral-level supervision (Norwegian link).

As a PhD research fellow with us, you will work toward completing your doctoral degree while gaining valuable experience that qualifies you for further careers in higher education and research, both within and outside academia. Planned start date for the position is 11 January 2027.

Your immediate supervisor will be the Head of Department.

Required selection criteria

To be considered for the position, you must:

• be eligible for admission to the PhD programme in Humanities and the Art, which will normally mean that you have an academically relevant master’s degree that includes a major independent work corresponding to a master’s thesis of at least 30 credits. Your course of study must be equivalent to a five-year Norwegian course, where 120 credits have been achieved at master’s level
• have an average grade from the master’s degree programme, or equivalent education, that is equal to B or better compared to NTNU’s grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic foundation
• have very good oral and written presentation skills in English

If you have a weaker grade background or a master’s thesis of less scope, you may be considered if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education. In that case, such documentation must be attached to the application. PLEASE NOTE: For detailed information about what the application should contain, see the section “About the application”.

In accordance with the Regulations concerning terms and conditions of employment, former PhD research fellows at NTNU are not eligible for the positions regardless of field of study. Applications from candidates who already have an approved doctorate in related fields from other institutions, either nationally or internationally, will also not be considered.

To complete a doctoral degree (PhD), it is important that you are able to

• demonstrate curiosity and strong motivation for the project
• work in a structured, systematic, and goal-oriented manner
• show good communication and collaboration skills
• work constructively under pressure or when facing setbacks
• contribute to a positive academic and social PhD and work environment
• follow through on tasks you set for yourself

Personal suitability will be emphasized in the assessment of applicants.

About the application

• Applicants with insufficient grades must document special suitability, by attaching documentation of relevant work experience and/or peer-reviewed scientific works or similar. We consider work done in collaboration with others. If your contribution to joint work is difficult to identify, you must include a brief explanation of your involvement.
