About us
At the Department of Mechanical Engineering, we unite the power of technology, people, and society to drive the transition toward a sustainable future. Through research, education, and collaboration, we create solutions that connect materials to mobility, ideas to impact – shaping a resilient and sustainable world. We make impact.
The Division of Marine Technology develops knowledge and solutions for the sustainable maritime systems of the future and a fossil-free society. Through interdisciplinary research, we contribute to energy-efficient and safe marine systems with reduced negative environmental impact – from ships and underwater vehicles to offshore structures and renewable ocean energy.
About the research project
Ship design is going through an exciting development towards sustainable transportation, seeing innovations to meet the growing demands on reduced emissions to air and underwater noise. Within the Kongsberg UTC, you will work together with one of the world leading industries in developing computational tools for future marine propulsion systems.
The topic for this Doctoral student position is in methods to assess cavitation inception, vibrations, and underwater radiated noise during the design phase, a complex multiphysics problem involving good physical understanding, high fidelity CFD, and possibly machine learning.
Who we are looking for
The following requirements are mandatory:
- To qualify as a Doctoral student, you must have a Master’s degree (masterexamen) of 120 credits or a Master’s degree (magisterexamen) of 60 credits* in fluid dynamics, mechanical engineering, naval architecture, or equivalent.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
- Experience in CFD, prefereably in STAR-CCM+ or OpenFOAM.
- Ability to work efficiently in a team together with your colleagues and our industrial partners
*for students with an education earned outside of Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor’s degree is accepted.
What you will do
- Take courses at an advanced level within the Graduate school of Shipping and Marine Technology or Thermo and Fluid dynamics ( Graduate schools | Chalmers )
- Develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing
- Work together with our partner Kongsberg Maritime to develop your research findings into industrial design methodologies
- The position generally also includes teaching on Chalmers’ undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding to 10 percent of working hours
Contract terms
- The Doctoral student positions are fully funded from start.
- The position is a fixed-term appointment of four years, with the possibility to teach up to 20%, which extends the position up to five years.
