PhD student position in Operations Management/Information systems

项目介绍

Topic: Data-Driven and Mechanistic Modelling for Microclimate and Pest/Disease Prediction in Protected Soft Fruit Production systems

Supervisors: prof. Jeroen Belien & prof. Estefanía Serral Asensio

Starting date: 1 December 2026

We are looking for a full-time PhD student to do research in the field of Operations Management and Information Systems under the supervision of prof. Jeroen Belien, Operations Management research group, and prof. Estefanía Serral Asensio, Information Systems Engineering Research Group (Faculty of Economics and Business) of KU Leuven (campus Brussels). We offer a fully funded position for a period of 4 years (upon yearly positive evaluation); this work should lead to a PhD degree. The PhD candidate will be supervised by KU Leuven, with co-supervision by the Research center for fruit growing (pcfruit vzw) , ensuring a strong integration of fundamental research and applied expertise.

Project

The overall objective of this project is to develop and implement practical prediction models for protected cultivation systems in soft fruit production (strawberries and Rubus crops such as raspberries and blackberries). The project follows a strongly applied, results-oriented approach, combining data acquisition, model development, and real-world validation. On the data and modelling side, the research focuses on:• Analyzing sensor-based climate data (e.g. temperature/relative humidity) to simulate inside microclimate conditions based on outdoor weather and different cropping systems.• Developing and refining prediction models for pest and fungal disease risks.A key component involves analyzing sensor data to establish relationships between outdoor weather conditions and microclimate conditions inside different protected cropping systems (e.g. tunnels, rain shelters, greenhouses). Two modelling approaches will be explored:• Mechanistic (white-box) models, using regression techniques to describe the relationship between outdoor and indoor climate variables and their residual patterns.• Data-driven (black-box) models, including neural networks, to capture complex, non-linear interactions and improve predictive accuracy. Model interpretability will be enhanced using explainable AI techniques such as SHAP, LIME, and ICE plots. In addition, the project aims to integrate phenological models with AI approaches to predict pest occurrence and fungal infection risks. These models will be trained using field observations, sensor data, and crop development information, and validated through real-world case studies in protected soft fruit systems. The outcome will be robust, hybrid prediction systems that combine biological understanding with advanced AI methods, enabling improved decision support for growers.
Although the focus is definitely on research, the candidate can be asked to give guidance to Bachelor and Master students, to be involved in teaching and to supervise and correct exams (maximum load 20%).
The successful candidate will be able to enrol in a fulltime PhD position at the Operations Management research group (Faculty of Economics and Business) of KU Leuven. Successful completion of the PhD project will lead to obtaining a doctoral degree (PhD). He/she will find a dynamic and pleasant working environment in Brussels and Leuven, in groups that are actively involved in scientific research at the highest international level. Candidates will be expected to participate in seminars and international conferences.

Profile

For this position, we are looking for someone with the following characteristics and assets:

• You recently completed your master’s degree (or are about to complete it at latest in 2026) in Engineering, Business Engineering, Mathematics, Data Science, Operations Research, Operations Management, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a similar degree with an equivalent academic level. Excellent (on average distinction level or higher) results in prior studies are a requirement.

• You have a solid, mathematically oriented background and strong programming skills.

• You can conduct independent research (demonstrated, e.g., by an excellent MSc thesis) as well as collaborate well in teams.

• You have excellent command of spoken and written English and are equipped with good communication skills. Knowledge of Dutch is an asset, but not mandatory.

• You are willing to participate in seminars and conferences and to enroll in the PhD program of the Faculty of Economics and Business at KU Leuven, which entails 21-ECTS of relevant coursework. You will also on a limited basis give guidance to students, be involved in teaching activities and in the supervision of exams.

Offer

• A fulltime PhD position of maximum four years (upon successful yearly evaluations). • An interesting and diverse job. • A competitive salary (conform the official university scales, salary scale 43). • Insurance coverage (health insurance and third-party liability insurance)• Free public transport, access to KU Leuven sports and cultural facilities at special rates, Ecocheques, … • Numerous opportunities for personal growth, illustrated by e.g., conference participation, “doctoral schools” courses on relevant topics for the PhD, participation in educational initiatives, and publication opportunities.• A social, tolerant, and constructive working environment that offers many and diverse opportunities for personal development.
Applications should be submitted through KU Leuven’s online platform together with:1) a letter of motivation with a statement of skills, research interests, and your fit for the PhD position.2) a curriculum vitae, and3) university diploma copies and transcripts.
