About the position
We are seeking a PhD candidate in molecular epidemiology, dermatology and sleep to join the HUNT Center for Molecular and Clinical Epidemiology and the Musculoskeletal health, sleep and physical activity research groups within the Department of Public Health and Nursing at NTNU, Trondheim, Norway.
The PhD candidate will work in a project where we aim to understand and improve outcomes for inflammatory skin diseases, with a main focus on psoriasis. For this purpose, we are utilizing data from large population-based cohorts, including the HUNT Study. The HUNT Study has four repeated health surveys since the 1980s, and contains detailed questionnaire data and biological materials.
The aim of this PhD project is to investigate the impact of sleep traits and insomnia symptoms on the risk of developing psoriasis, and to explore the potential causal relationships. The study will integrate observational data with available omics datasets – such as genetic data – to enable causal inference analyses within the project period.
The PhD candidate will be part of a multidisciplinary research environment at the HUNT Center for Molecular and Clinical Epidemiology, and the Musculoskeletal health, sleep and physical activity research groups – two large research groups composed of scientists with diverse scientific backgrounds. The groups collaborate with world-leading international partners to advance understanding of human health and disease by studying population-level variation.
The PhD position has a duration of three years (100%). The PhD candidate should start no later than September 30, 2026.
Your immediate leader will be the leader of the epidemiology and Medical Statistics group.

Required selection criteria
- You must have a relevant Master’s degree in medicine or equivalent such as epidemiology. Your course of study must correspond to a five-year Norwegian course, where 120 credits have been obtained at master’s level
- You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and have an average grade from your Master’s degree study, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared to NTNU’s grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic foundation. If you have a weaker grade background, you maybe considered if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education
- You must meet the requirements for admission to the faculty’s Doctoral Programme
- Basic knowledge within statistics and quantitative research methods
- Excellent written and oral English language skills.
The appointment is to be made in accordance with NTNUs guidelines for recruitment positions and Regulations for the degrees philosophiae doctor (ph.d.) and philosophiae doctor (ph.d.) in artistic development work at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU)for general criteria for the position.
Preferred selection criteria
- Experience in epidemiological research or study design
- Experience in statistical analysis using SPSS, Stata, R, Phyton, or equivalent software
- Clinical experience in medicine and/or dermatology
- Authorship of scientific publications

- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Good communication skills and ability to collaborate across academic disciplines
- High motivation for the research field

Salary and conditions
In the position of PhD Candidate, code 1017, your gross salary will normally be NOK 550 800,-per annum depending on qualifications and seniority. A 2% statutory contribution to the State Pension Fund is deducted from the salary.
The employment period is 3 years.
For employment as a PhD Candidate, it is a prerequisite that you gain admission to the PhD programme in Medicine and Health science within three months of your employment contract start date, and that you participate in an organized doctoral programme through out the period of employment.
The position is conditional on external funding.

For the necessary professional and social interaction, it is a prerequisite that you are physically present and available to the institution on a daily basis.
The appointment is carried out in accordance with the principles of the State Employees Act, and Export control (legislation that regulates the export of knowledge, technology and services). Candidates who, after assessment of the application and attachments, are considered to bein conflict with the criteria in the latter act, will not be able to be employed.
