Job description
A Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (SKO 1352) is available at the Department of Media and Communication, University of Oslo (UiO).
The position is part of the project “EU Kids Online Norway”, and affiliated with the Centre for Studies of Children, Youth, and Media and the international interdisciplinary research network EU Kids Online and their studies.
The successful candidate will develop and carry out an independent research project that is expected to generate significant value and new insights in the field of children, youth, and media.
The project must show clear relevance to EU Kids Online Norway. Relevant topics include but are not limited to children’s or young people’s digital media use, online risks, opportunities, rights, media regulation, wellbeing, or digital skills, and can focus on individual, social and/or national level factors. Projects with a comparative dimension are welcome.
Methodological approaches must be clear and appropriate to the project’s overall objectives. It is a strength, but not a firm requirement, if the proposed project make use of or build upon existing data and research trajectories from the EU Kids Online network. The fellow may be granted access to both national and international EU Kids Online datasets, subject to established data access procedures and ethical guidelines.
The postdoctoral fellow is expected to make a strong contribution to the ongoing academic activities of the Center and the EU Kids Online network. This includes participation in research seminars, collaborative work, dissemination, and shared centre tasks. The fellow is expected to take an active role in strengthening national and international research on children and digital media and to contribute to the further development of the interdisciplinary research environment at UiO.

More about the position
The position is available for a period of 4 years. There is a 25 % component of the position that is devoted to teaching and administrative duties / other career-promoting work. These duties also include obtaining basic teaching qualifications.
The successful candidate is expected to become part of the research environment/network of the Department and contribute to its development. The purpose of a postdoctoral position is for the employee to develop a research profile and competence that qualifies them to apply for an Associate Professor position. The position may also provide other competencies relevant to the postdoctoral fellow’s future career.
A career plan will be developed for the Postdoctoral Fellow, specifying the competencies the Postdoctoral Fellow should acquire. UiO is
responsible for following up on the career plan and ensuring that the Postdoctoral Fellow has access to career guidance throughout the
postdoctoral term.
If the Postdoctoral Fellow does not already have educational qualifications that meet the requirements for an associate professor position, UiO shall facilitate the acquisition of such competence during the employment period.
Qualifications
Required qualifications
- PhD or equivalent academic qualifications in media and communication, sociology, psychology, education, childhood studies or another relevant field.
- The candidate’s research project must be closely connected to EU Kids Online Norway.
- Fluent oral and written communication skills in English.
- Personal suitability and motivation for the position.
- The doctoral dissertation must be submitted for evaluation by the application deadline. Appointment is dependent on the public defense of the doctoral thesis being approved.
Desired qualifications
- Experience with research on children, youth and digital technologies.
- Experience with empirical methods (qualitative, quantitative, mixed methods, or digital methods).
- Experience with international and/or interdisciplinary research collaboration.
- Teaching experience

- Salary in position as Postdoctoral Fellow, position code 1352 in salary range NOK from 595 000 – to 677 000, depending on competence and experience. From the salary, 2 percent is deducted in statutory contributions to the State Pension Fund.
