The Department of Archaeology at the Museum of Cultural History is announcing a position as a PhD research fellow for a research talent motivated to contribute to the museum’s research on the Viking Age.

The Museum of Cultural History is Norway’s leading research museum in cultural history. We work to strengthen the connection between interdisciplinary research at a high international level and the museum’s societal mission in cultural heritage management. The Department of Archaeology is responsible for the Museum of Cultural History’s collections of Nordic antiquities, medieval art, and runic inscriptions, and has expertise in all periods covered by our collections. The department has a large academic environment with very strong groups in, among other things, the Stone Age and the Viking/medieval periods.

The research group called Centre for Viking Age Research represents the museum’s academic environment in Viking Age studies. The position is announced openly within the field of Viking Age research. We are looking for someone who is proactive and wishes to be part of our dynamic research environment. Tailoring proposals to fit with the overall group strategy will be an advantage.

The successful candidate will be based and supervised at the Department of Archaeology at the Museum of Cultural History.

More about the position 

The appointment as a PhD research fellow is for a period of 3 years.  

PhD candidates who submit their doctoral dissertation for assessment with a written recommendation from their supervisor within 3 years after the start of their PhD position, will be offered a 12-month completion grant at the Museum of Cultural History.

The main purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree. The research fellow will be enrolled in the PhD program at the Department of Archaeology, Conservation and History at the University of Oslo and is expected to complete the project within the three-year period. The applicants must fulfil the requirements for admission to the PhD program at the Faculty of Humanities, University of Oslo, and will be responsible for applying for admission within the given deadlines. A final plan for the researcher education program must be approved and agreed upon no later than three months after the starting date.

Qualification requirements

  • Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in Nordic Archaeology or other relevant fields, including a Master’s thesis of at least 30 ECTS. 
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in Norwegian (or another Scandinavian language) and English (see language requirements
  • Applicants must be able to read and understand material written in a Scandinavian language 
     

In the assessment of applications, emphasis will be placed on the quality of the project description (see “How to Apply”) and the relevance for the research profile at the Museum of Cultural History, including: Scientific audacity and scientific innovativeness.
The ability to mobilize our collections and the material from archaeological excavations in a broader context of research. 
Our museum is the largest museum of cultural history in Norway. This gives an extraordinary opportunity to professional dissemination. Concrete proposal for dissemination will be an advantage. Applicants who have recently graduated with excellent results may be given preference. The quality of the research proposal will also be weighted in the final decision.

Personal skills

The applicant’s academic and personal qualifications for completing the project will be emphasized in the final assessment.  Motivation for the position, good collaborations skills and ability to contributing to the museum’s overall research portfolio and strategy will also be considered important.
