PhD position
The Faculty of Medicine, Department of Clinical Science, is offering a full-time PhD position for a duration of three (3) years. The position is part of the project “Early epimutations and female cancer”, funded by the University of Bergen and the Trond Mohn Foundation.
About the project/work tasks:
- The project focuses on early epigenetic aberrations occurring during embryonic development, and resulting in increased risk of cancer in adult life. The overall aims are to identify the causes of such aberrations (hereunder genetic causes and environmental influence) and to identify the impact these aberrations have on development of cancer as well as on the clinical trajectories of established cancers (hereunder efficacy of treatment).
- The practical work will consist of advanced molecular methods, like high-sensitivity methylation specific sequencing, stem cell cultivation, laser microdissection, high sensitivity measurements of pollutants in biomaterial from patients.
- The project will include analyses of multiple types of cells, from different organs, and from both cancer patients and healthy controls.
- The hired candidate will work on, and lead, own projects, but at the same time work closely together with other PhD-candidates and researchers who work on similar topics.
- The hired candidate will work within the Bergen Breast Cancer Group at the Mohn Cancer Research Laboratory and the K.G.Jebsen Centre for Epimutations in Cancer (Mohn Cancer Research Laboratory | UiB). The research group currently consist of around 15 employees and work closely integrated with the Cancer Clinic at Haukeland University Hospital
Qualifications and personal qualities:
- The applicant must possess a Master`s degree or an equivalent in molecular biology, cellular biology, bioinformatics or equivalent, or have a medical degree at a similar level
- The candidate must have relevant experience from projects within epigenetics, work with nucleic acids, cell cultivation, bioinformatics and/or cancer relevant clinical experience.
- The candidate should demonstrate the ability to work independently and in a structured manner, while also being capable of effective collaboration with others
- The candidate must have a strong motivation for translational cancer research.
- The candidate must exhibit both a strong ability and motivation to undertake a PhD project.
- Fluency in both oral and written English is required. The applicant’s personal suitability for the position is a significant factor in the evaluation.
Applicants whose educational qualifications are from countries other than Norway must provide a certified translation of the diploma and transcript of grades to English or a Scandinavian language, if the original documents are not in any of these languages. Organized research training (PhD program):
The selected candidate will be required to enrol in the University of Bergen’s approved PhD programme, aiming to complete the degree within three years. Admission to the organized research training (PhD program) at the Faculty is essential for this position. Application for admission to the PhD programme, including a project plan outline for the training plan, must be submitted no later than three months after the date of commencement.
The PhD-position:
PhD-positions are fixed-term appointments. Candidates cannot be employed in a PhD position for more than one fixed-term period at the same institution, nor have held a similar position at any institution within the region.

least one year of employment in a position as a General Practitioner or Dentist,

application.). Medical specialist starts on salary NOK 635 000 (For applicants with
specialist training, a certificate of specialist approval from the Norwegian Directorate
