About the project
The Norwegian Center on AI for Decisions (aiD) has vacancy for a PhD fellowship in Statistics. aiD is one of the new Norwegian AI research initiatives, funded by the Research Council of Norway and industry partners. It consists of 13 research partners and more than 60 partners from industry and public sector led by NTNU and SINTEF. All open positions will be cross-linked on the aiD website aid-center.no .
About the position
The successful applicant will work at NTNU in Trondheim. The Department of Mathematical Sciences, NTNU, will host the PhD position. The topic of the PhD fellowship is at the interface of generative AI models, spatio-temporal statistical models and data assimilation. A successful candidate will be offered a three-year position, which could potentially be extended with teaching duties.
The PhD student will be conducting research on AI-based approaches combined with spatiotemporal statistical methodologies. While new AI-based approaches can provide effective generation and learning, it is important to understand the properties of outputs and gain insight in the opportunities and challenges of integrating AI-based approaches in established routines. In the spatio-temporal setting, it is important to study if and when algorithms deliver reliable predictions with realistic uncertainties, correlation structures and conditioning to data outcomes. The topics of the PhD student are motivated by geoscience applications and especially CO2 storage projects, where there are complex decisions to be made under multivariate uncertainties.
The PhD student is expected to develop models and methods for a degree in the mathematical sciences. Multidisciplinary research is strongly encouraged in aiD, and the successful candidate would also collaborate with scientists from other research fields.
Duties of the position
- Complete the doctoral education until obtaining a doctorate.
- Carry out research of good quality within the framework described above.
- Academic publications and popular science dissemination.
