PhD scholarship in Error Propagation and Implicit Priors in Computational UQ

项目介绍

Would you like to work with applied and computational mathematics in a collaborative and ambitious research team? Are you interested in establishing new insight about the influence and impact of data errors in the computed results? We can offer a 3-year PhD position with scientific challenges and international collaboration.

Responsibilities and qualifications
This PhD project is concerned with analysis of the influence of data errors in iterative solvers for inverse problems such as computed tomography and image deblurring. It is part of the research project DUDE: Data Uncertainty and Design/Reconstruction Errors funded by Independent Research Fund Denmark. The work is carried out together with two postdocs in the Section for Scientific Computing.

The goal is to establish a solid understanding of how data errors propagate in iterative regularization methods such as CGLS and GMRES. In addition, we aim to interpret these methods in the framework of computational uncertainty quantification. The project continues the work in the project CUQI: Computational Uncertainty Quantification for Inverse Problems.

We will utilize and expand our software CUQIpy, and the results will be tested on data from, e.g., dental scanners and tokamak fusion tomography.

In addition to research tasks, you will take courses for 30 ECTS on general and specific topics, and you will teach students in courses and do project supervision at various levels.

You must have a two-year master’s degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master’s degree. The MSc degree should be in applied and/or computational mathematics.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see DTU’s rules for the PhD education

Assessment
The assessment of the applicants will be made by Prof. Per Christian Hansen and one additional member of the Section for Scientific Computing.

We offer
DTU is a leading technical university globally recognized for the excellence of its research, education, innovation and scientific advice. We offer a rewarding and challenging job in an international environment. We strive for academic excellence in an environment characterized by collegial respect and academic freedom tempered by responsibility.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

The period of employment is 3 years. The starting date is September 1, 2026, or as early as possible thereafter (according to mutual agreement).

The position is funded by a grant from the Independent Research Fund Denmark, and it is connected to the Section for Scientific Computing.
