Do you want to contribute to the development of sustainable supply chains while deepening your engagement in research within a collaborative and supportive environment? Here, you will have the opportunity to combine societally relevant research with teaching in a setting characterised by strong collegiality and a high level of engagement.
Your work assignments
The transition towards sustainable supply chains places new demands on how organisations make logistics-related decisions. Traditionally, financial metrics such as purchase price, inventory costs, and transportation costs have dominated, while sustainability has often been treated separately and given a subordinate role. To give sustainability considerations a more prominent role in decision-making, new approaches are needed that integrate total cost and sustainability in a transparent and traceable manner. This represents a key challenge for both industry and society.
The Division of Logistics and Quality Management at Linköping University is currently conducting a highly relevant research project focusing on issues related to sustainability and total cost. We are now seeking a PhD candidate for this project.
We are looking for someone who wants to contribute to a more sustainable future, is curious about doctoral studies, and thrives in a dynamic environment where a high degree of independence is combined with strong self-motivation and good planning skills. As a PhD candidate, you will be part of an active research environment, collaborating with senior researchers and other doctoral students.
Within the framework of the project, you will take part in designing studies and have the opportunity to develop your ability to plan, conduct, and communicate research. Your work will include both literature reviews and empirical studies of how companies address sustainability and total cost, for example through interviews and workshops. The position also involves writing scientific articles for international publication, and research is therefore to a large extent communicated in English.
As a PhD student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time. The position typically includes participation in logistics courses within engineering programmes, which are primarily taught in Swedish.
Your qualifications
You hold a Master’s degree (MSc or equivalent) in Industrial Engineering and Management, Logistics, Transport Systems, or a related field. Alternatively, you have completed courses with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 60 of which must be in advanced courses in logistics and/or supply chain management. Alternatively, you have gained essentially corresponding knowledge in another way. The requirement for a degree must be met no later than the time the employment decision is finalized, which occurs when the employment contract is signed.
You have strong knowledge in logistics, and it is considered an advantage if you also have knowledge of, experience in, or a strong interest in sustainability issues.
You show initiative, have a strong willingness to learn, and are able to engage with new and challenging problems.
Proficiency in English is a requirement for the position, and proficiency in Swedish is considered an advantage.
Your workplace
Division of Logistics and Quality Management is one of Sweden’s leading research environments in logistics and quality management. Here, you will work in close collaboration with industry, the public sector, and international research networks. Teaching is primarily directed at Master’s-level students in engineering programmes. Both teaching and research are largely campus-based and collaborative in nature, which means that most work is carried out on campus. At the division, we value a high level of engagement in both teaching and research among all our staff.
The employment
When taking up the post, you will be admitted to the program for doctoral studies. More information about the doctoral studies at each faculty is available at Doctoral studies at Linköping University
The employment has a duration of four years’ full-time equivalent. You will initially be employed for a period of one year. The employment will subsequently be renewed for periods of maximum duration two years, depending on your progress through the study plan. The employment may be extended up to a maximum of five years, based on the amount of teaching and departmental duties you have carried out. Further extensions can be granted in special circumstances.
