Malmö Academy of Music hereby announces two doctoral student positions in Music (Artistic Research), with a specialisation in experimental music drama. The positions are open for artists in music – instrumentalists, singers, and composers – with innovative and forward-looking approaches to artistic creation and research who demonstrate advanced artistic skill and a strong artistic practice.
The positions are based at Malmö Academy of Music, Lund University. Doctoral subject: Music (Artistic Research).
The doctoral studies start Monday, January 11th, 2027.

Project description
Experimental music drama is here understood as interdisciplinary performing arts practices in which music functions as a primary dramaturgical and compositional force. This area includes, but is not limited to, opera, music theatre, composed theatre, radiophonic and acousmatic forms, as well as hybrid stage-based or mediated formats.

The doctoral projects shall have an experimental and exploratory orientation, aiming to critically examine and further develop artistic processes, forms of expression, and performance practices within this area. Artistic practice shall constitute the primary point of departure for the research. Projects may engage with and critically explore technologies such as live electronics, sound processing, interactive technologies, and visual media, both as means of artistic expression and as integral components of artistic research processes.

The doctoral project shall:
· be rooted in the applicant’s own artistic practice,
· articulate research questions that can be explored through artistic experimentation, iterative processes, and critical reflection,
· be anchored in relevant theoretical and methodological perspectives,
· be feasible within the framework of four years of full-time doctoral studies, and
· constitute a substantial and original contribution to the development of artistic research in music.

The expected outcome is a thematically coherent body of artistic work, accompanied by appropriate documentation and reflective components demonstrating research-oriented artistic practice.

Doctoral students are admitted to doctoral studies and employed at Lund University. Doctoral education in Music at Malmö Academy of Music is grounded in artistic research. Artistic practice and critical reflection are integrated throughout the doctoral process and form the basis for knowledge production. The studies combine individual artistic work and research with active participation in seminars, courses, and presentations. The doctoral student is expected to be physically present and actively participate in the research environment at Malmö Academy of Music. Each doctoral student is supported by a supervisory team. The doctoral studies culminate in a documented artistic research project leading to a doctoral degree, Doctor of Philosophy in Music (Artistic Research). The academy offers a rich artistic research environment, including fully equipped practice facilities, electroacoustic and recording studios, and access to interdisciplinary research clusters such as “Sound, Narrative, Technologies” and “ArtCollab”. Doctoral students are expected to contribute actively to this collegial and interdisciplinary environment and to present research nationally and internationally.

Required qualifications (eligibility)
Admission to doctoral studies in Music requires that general and specific entry requirements are fulfilled at the time of application, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance and Lund University’s admission regulations and the general syllabus for admitted from 2026.

General entry requirements
General eligibility is fulfilled if the applicant:
–  has been awarded a second-cycle qualification, or
–  has completed courses comprising at least 240 ECTS, of which at least 60 ECTS were awarded at second-cycle level, or
–  has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

Specific entry requirements
Specific eligibility for doctoral studies in Music is fulfilled if the applicant:
–  has been awarded a degree of at least 240 ECTS in performance, church music or composition at a music academy, or has equivalent qualification,
–  has completed an independent artistic project of such scope and quality that it enables an assessment of the applicant’s suitability for artistic research, and
–  demonstrates good proficiency in written and spoken English.

Applicants who do not meet the formal degree requirements may apply for validation of equivalent knowledge and competence acquired through other education, professional training or artistic practice. Documentation of such competence must be attached to the application.

Meritorious qualifications
The following qualifications are considered meritorious:
· documented experience of interdisciplinary or experimental artistic practices,
· experience of working with music theatre, opera or related performative formats in which music plays a central role,
· experience of artistic work involving digital, electronic or interactive technologies,
· previous engagement in artistic research contexts or research-oriented artistic projects.

Selection and basis of assessment
Employment as a doctoral student is regulated by the Swedish Code of Statutes (1998:80). Only applicants who are admitted or eligible for admission to doctoral studies may be employed as doctoral students.

Selection shall primarily be based on the applicant’s ability to successfully complete third-cycle studies. This ability is assessed on the basis of:
–  the artistic quality, originality and feasibility of the proposed project within the period corresponding to four years of full-time study,
–  the quality of the research plan with regard to research questions, artistic approach, relevance to the research field, and methodological considerations,
–  the applicant’s artistic proficiency and demonstrated capacity for artistic research,
–  the department’s overall research profile, specialisation needs and supervisory capacity.

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to interviews, planned to take place between August 18-20, 2026. As part of the interview process, applicants may be asked to present and discuss selected elements of their submitted artistic portfolio.

About the employment
The employment is a full-time, fixed-term doctoral studentship for a period corresponding to four years of full-time study, starting on Monday, January 11th, 2027.

Departmental duties, such as teaching or administrative work, may be included up to a maximum of 20% of full-time employment, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100). The Faculty of Fine and Performing Arts is one of nine faculties within Lund University and includes Malmö Art Academy, Malmö Academy of Music and Malmö Theatre Academy, as well as the Inter Arts Center and Choral Centre South.
