项目介绍
Are you interested in working with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and eXtended Reality (XR) in real-world manufacturing applications, with the support of competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Do you want to contribute to the development of human-centric manufacturing in the context of Industry 5.0, where AI is used to support operators through context-aware guidance, adaptive assistance, and intelligent human-machine interaction in industrial environments? Are you looking for an employer that invests in sustainable employeeship and offers safe, favourable working conditions?
We welcome you to apply for a PhD position at Uppsala University.
The Department of Civil and Industrial Engineering consists of three divisions: Industrial Engineering and Management, Quality Science, and Civil Engineering and Built Environment. The department has approximately 100 employees and has its research and education both at the Ångström Laboratory in Uppsala and at Campus Gotland. For more information, see the web of the department. This position will be based at the Division of Industrial Engineering and Management in Uppsala.
Industrial Engineering and Management is a broad, interdisciplinary subject that spans several sub-areas ranging from organization and management, innovation and entrepreneurship as well as industrial and social marketing within technology and innovation-intensive activities to automation and optimization, to machine design, production and production systems.
The Division of Industrial Engineering and Management offers a collaborative and innovative research environment, working closely with industry to address real-world challenges in digital transformation. The division is known for its strong links to Swedish industry, a dynamic research culture, and focus on practical impact and innovation.
As a PhD student here, you will be part of a supportive team, with access to advanced research infrastructure and development opportunities through both academic and industrial collaborations. For more information, see the web of the division.
Duties
You will conduct research within projects focusing on multimodal AI and XR for human-centric manufacturing. The overall aim is to develop methods and digital solutions that support operators in manufacturing through context-aware guidance, knowledge transfer, skill development, and cognitive and physical support. Your research will focus on developing AI-based methods for analysing and modelling human tasks, workflows, and operator context using multimodal data from manufacturing environments and XR devices (video, audio, motion, gaze, and other sensor streams). This may include, for example:
- developing multimodal AI pipelines for interpreting operator actions, task progress, and work context
- modelling workflows, procedures, and expert knowledge for context-aware support
- contributing to real-time support systems that combine AI, sensors, context models, and XR interfaces
- evaluating usability, trust, acceptance, and human-centered aspects of AI- and XR-based systems in industrial environments
You will work closely with other academic and industrial partners to access data, validate solutions in real environments, and ensure the applicability of the developed methods.
The main task of a doctoral student is to devote to the doctoral education, which includes both participation in research projects and doctoral education courses. The position may include up to 20% teaching and administrative duties.
Requirements
To meet the entry requirements for doctoral studies, you must:
- hold a Master’s (second-cycle) degree, or
- have completed at least 240 credits in higher education, with at least 60 credits at Master’s level including an independent project worth at least 15 credits, or.
- have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way.
For this specific position, examples of relevant educational backgrounds and combinations include: industrial engineering, automation engineering, computer science, artificial intelligence, information technology, or related engineering discipline.
We expect you to have:
- ability to assimilate knowledge at the research level
- understanding of and experience in machine learning, computer vision, multi-modal data, and real-time sensor data processing
- strong interest in AI, XR, and digital technologies for industrial applications
- strong programming skills, for example in Python, C#, or C++
- experience with HCI, usability evaluation, or human-centered design
- ability to work both independently and collaboratively
- good command of English, both spoken and written
- personal qualities such as a structured approach to problem-solving, self-motivation, and good collaborative ability
We will evaluate the candidates based on the above assessment criteria.
Additional qualifications
The following qualifications are considered merits:
- experience with multimodal AI, deep learning, or real-time sensor data processing
- experience with deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow
- experience with knowledge representation, LLMs, or context-aware AI systems
- Experience with edge computing, or edge-level AI deployment
- experience with Unity or XR development
- experience of working with industrial data or collaborating with industry
- knowledge of Swedish
