查尔姆斯理工大学

Doctoral student in radar remote sensing of sea ice

项目介绍

About us

At the Division of Geoscience and Remote Sensing, we develop advanced methods and instruments to observe and understand the Earth system. Combining satellite, airborne and ground-based measurements with modelling and machine learning, we collaborate globally to monitor environmental change and support a sustainable future.

About the research project

This project intends to tackle new challenges emerging from a thinner and more dynamic ice cover in the polar regions and the drive for models with higher resolution. This will be done by improving methods for satellite observations of sea ice drift and deformation. Driving forces for drift and deformation include wind, waves and ocean surface currents. Connections between drift/deformation and forces will be analysed and information that can improve ice charts, weather forecasts and climate predictions will be generated. Observations will be based on synthetic aperture radar at multiple frequencies. Validation data will be collected during expeditions to the Arctic Ocean, Antarctica, Greenland and the Baltic Sea.

The research project is one of the first in the new Swedish research school on polar science SEAL (School of Excellence in Arctic and Antarctic Learning).

Who we are looking for

The following requirements are mandatory:

  • To qualify as a Doctoral student, you must have a Master’s degree (masterexamen) of 120 credits or a Master’s degree (magisterexamen) of 60 credits* in electrical engineering, engineering physics, physical oceanography or related disciplines.
  • Good skills in programming (e.g. Python, Matlab, C/C++)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Good social skills, meaning that you enjoy collaborating with others in an interdiciplinary and international environment

*for students with an education earned outside of Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor’s degree is accepted.

The following experience will strengthen your application:

  • Practical experience with radars or remote sensing data
  • Completed courses in signal processing or radar systems
  • Experience from sea ice field work or polar expeditions
  • Experience from work with oceanographic or meteorological data and models
  • Communication skills in Swedish are valuable, but not required.

What you will do

  • Take courses at an advanced level within the Graduate school of Radio and Space Science and within the new Swedish research school on polar science SEAL (School of Excellence in Arctic and Antarctic Learning).
  • Improve and test algorithms for retrieval of sea ice drift, sea ice deformation, winds and sea surface currents from satellite data
  • Participate in expeditions and field work for collection of validation data
  • Collect, document and analyze data from satellites, drones, in situ instruments/measurements and models
  • Develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing
  • The position generally also includes teaching on Chalmers’ undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding to 20 percent of working hours

Contract terms

  • The Doctoral student positions are fully funded from start.
  • The position is a fixed-term appointment of four years, with the possibility to teach up to 20%, which extends the position up to five years.
  • A starting salary of 34,550 SEK per month (valid from May 25, 2025).
  • Doctoral studies require physical presence throughout the entire study period. A valid residence permit must be presented by the study start date; otherwise the admission may be withdrawn.

What we offer

  • As a Doctoral student at Chalmers, you are an employee and enjoy all employee benefits. Read more about  working at Chalmers  and our benefits for employees.
  • A dynamic and inspiring working environment in the coastal city of Gothenburg
  • Read more about Sweden’s generous parental leave, subsidized day care, free schools, healthcare etc at Move To Gothenburg.

Chalmers is dedicated to improving gender balance and actively works with equality projects, such as the GENIE Initiative for gender equality and excellence. We celebrate diversity and consider equality and inclusion as fundamental aspects of all our activities.

If Swedish is not your native language, Chalmers offers Swedish courses to help you settle in.
