Lab-on-Chip Systems for Independent Mechanical and Electrical Stimulation of Cells

项目介绍

The proposed research will be conducted at the intersection of two KU Leuven research group: the Soft Robotics research group (lead by Prof. Benjamin Gorissen), and the Laboratory of Electrochemical MATerials and BioInterfaces (eMATI, lead by Prof. Irene Taurino).
The soft robotics research group from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at KU Leuven focuses on exploring the intersection of soft robotics and (micro)fabrication. The greater goal is to create systems that are able to interact with living systems by harnessing the unique characteristics of soft materials. We focus both on the theoretical design of such system, their numerical optimization, and the experimental validation on prototypes that range from the centimeter to the millimeter scale.

eMATI develops nano- and microtechnologies to improve electrochemical systems for sensing and therapy. Its research focuses on platforms with controlled performance, and reliable signal stability, while also advancing fabrication strategies for stretchable and biodegradable/bioresorbable electrochemical devices. The group also designs array-based platforms with novel electrodes to control body parts and biological processes on chip.

Project

In the human body, the behavior of cells is not only influenced by biochemical signals, but also by biophysical stimuli such as mechanical strain and electrical potential. The combination of these three types of signals plays a critical role in tissue remodeling and oncogenic transformation. However, current lab-on-chip devices do not enable the independent application of mechanical loading (stretch and compression), electrical stimulation, and other biophysical cues to cellular constructs within a single platform. This project aims to develop such an advanced platform: a cell stimulation device capable of independently delivering all three modalities of stimuli, compatible with existing imaging and visualization techniques, and suitable for use by professionals in translational biomedical research. The successful candidate will contribute to the design of the device, the simulation of its mechanical and electrical behavior, its fabrication using cleanroom technologies, and its validation in collaboration with our clinical partner, who will test different prototypes in a research setting. We are looking for a creative and motivated researcher with strong analytical skills and hands-on experimental aptitude. Experience with finite element analysis and/or micromanufacturing techniques such as lithography is considered an asset.

Profile

The ideal candidate fulfils the following requirements:• Master degree in (mechanical or electrical) engineering, physics, materials science or equivalent with at least distinction.• Strong background in micromanufacturing.• Familiar with finite element modelling and experimental validation.• Proficiency in English (written and oral).• The candidate must be creative, have good problem-solving skills, should be ambitious but should above all be a team player! • The candidate must be able to work independently, pay attention to experimental accuracy and precision with new concepts in a critical way.• The candidate must have good communication skills to report results (written and oral).• The candidate must be willing to write a PhD fellowship proposal for national funding. We are looking for enthusiastic PhD candidates who shows a proactive attitude towards research in developing original concepts of actuators.

Offer

• A doctoral scholarship of four years and, if successful, a PhD in Engineering Science• A full-time employment for four years, with an intermediate evaluation after one year• Benefits such as health insurance, access to university sports facilities, etc.• The opportunity to be active in an exciting and international research environment, engage in research collaborations and participate at international conferences.• An excellent doctoral training at the Arenberg Doctoral School in an international environment at a top European university. This will allow you to gain the skills required to successfully complete your PhD, as well as develop yourself as an independent researcher. Moreover, opportunities are provided to acquire deeper knowledge in subjects related to the topic by participating in trainings, summer schools, or lecture series in- and outside of KU Leuven• Starting date: September 2026 (but somewhat flexible for the ideal candidate)
