PhD Research Fellow in energy resources and system modeling

项目介绍

There is a vacancy for a PhD position in energy resources and system modeling at the Geophysical Institute, University of Bergen. The position is for a fixed-term period of 3 years with the possibility of a 4th year with compulsory other work (e.g. teaching at the Institute). The position is associated with the research group in energy at the Geophysical Institute, the Bergen Offshore Wind Center and the energy informatics lab at the Institute of Informatics, funded by the Akademia agreement between UiB and Equinor.

About the project/work tasks

The electricity consumption in Norway is expected to increase from todays 140 TWh to possibly 220 TWh in 2050, mainly driven by the transition to zero greenhouse emissions (electrification), industrial growth and new production. To tackle the increased demand, the Norwegian government has planned for 30GW of installed offshore wind power by 2040. This will drastically change the Norwegian electricity system and making the power system more weather dependent and the production more intermittent.

The PhD will work will be twofold. The first part will be to improve and develop datasets and estimation algorithms for renewable energy that will enhance the simulation capabilities of the open-source energy market simulation model for operational planning JulES developed by the Norwegian Water and Energy Directorate (NVE).
Secondly, the candidate will perform energy market simulations using JulES to investigate feasible location and connection strategies for Norwegian offshore wind power into the existing energy system.

We offer the possibility to become part of a highly international and scientifically diverse working environment as part of Bergen Offshore Wind Center (BOW) co-located with the Geophysical Institute, University of Bergen. The work will be done in close cooperation the energy informatics lab at the Institute of Informatics, Univ. of Bergen and the group developing JulES at the Norwegian Water and Energy Directorate.

Qualifications and personal qualities

  • The applicant must hold a master’s degree or equivalent in applied mathematics, renewable energy, energy system modeling or other related disciplines. Master students can apply provided they complete their final master exam before 01.07.2025. It is a condition of employment that the master has been awarded before employment.
  • Documented knowledge on renewable energy is required.
  • Experience and proven knowledge in scientific programming using Python, R, Matlab, Julia or similar is required.
  • Knowledge of energy systems, energy system modelling or the European energy market will be an advantage.
  • Understanding of atmospheric processes important for renewable energy production and production variability will be an advantage.
  • Knowledge of machine learning or optimization will be an advantage.
  • Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner and demonstrate good collaborative skills.
  • Applicants must be proficient in both written and oral English.

Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized. Ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates.
