Doctoral (PhD) student position in mental health among youth

To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

The research group

The PhD position will be within the research group “Epidemiology of Psychiatric Conditions, Substance use and Social Environment (EPiCSS)”. The ultimate aim of the research in the research group is early intervention and prevention of mental ill-health and psychiatric disorders (including substance use), by understanding risk and protective factors in the context of the social environment.

The doctoral student will participate in the Research School in Health Sciences (FIH) at Karolinska Institutet, which is organised by Karolinska Institutet in collaboration with Region Stockholm. The goal of the research school is to strengthen education in health and care sciences at the doctoral level and stimulate high-quality research.

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student

We are looking for an enthusiastic candidate for a PhD position in the project “Youth Participation in Public Mental Health Promotion in Schools” – a project which aims to improve youth mental health through studying the conditions for their participation in health promotion interventions in schools in Sweden. Mental health is a public health issue of major concern, and working together with youth in schools provides an opportunity to not only improve their wellbeing now, but to set up healthy behaviors and practices that can improve their health in the long term. However, evidence on to adapt interventions that take a holistic approach, where active participation form youth is promoted. This is the gap that present research project aims to fill.

Your role will involve:

  • coordinating the data collection from key stakeholders in Sweden as well as from schools in Stockholm.
  • developing qualitative and quantitative data collection tools.
  • conducting qualitative interviews and discussions, survey studies and systematic reviews.
  • analyzing, interpreting data and writing academic publications.

You will be expected to travel to schools across Stockholm regularly.

Doctoral students in the Research School in Health Sciences also participate in courses and activities organized by the Research School.

Eligibility requirements for doctoral education

In order to participate in the selection for a doctoral position, you must meet the following general (A) and specific (B) eligibility requirements at latest by the application deadline.

A) General eligibility requirementYou meet the general eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:

  1. have been awarded a second-cycle/advanced/master qualification (i.e. master degree), or
  2. have satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the advanced/second-cycle/master level, or
  3. have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.*

B) Specific eligibility requirement

You meet the specific eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:

– Show proficiency in English equivalent to the course English B/English 6 at Swedish upper secondary school.

Verification of your documents Karolinska Institutet checks the authenticity of your documents. Karolinska Institutet reserves the right to revoke admission if supporting documents are discovered to be fraudulent. Submission of false documents is a violation of Swedish law and is considered grounds for legal action.

(A) and (B) can only be certified by the documentation requirement for doctoral education.

Skills and personal qualities

The candidate must have the following essential qualifications:

  • a master’s degree in a field relevant to global health or mental health (e.g. global health, public health, social science, psychology).
  • fluent in written and spoken Swedish and English.
  • experience of qualitative data collection and analysis (this can include interviews, FGDs, observations).
  • able and willing to travel frequently to schools across Stockholm.

Desirable qualifications include:

  • demonstrated experience in designing, conducting and analysing qualitative data.
  • demonstrated experience of having conducted research within a relevant field of study, that have been published in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
  • work experience within a multi-country and multi-disciplinary team.
  • work experience with youth or in school-based projects.
  • knowledge of the mental health research field.

The candidate needs to have excellent skills in collaboration, multi-disciplinary work, and be well organised.

The applicants must have legal right and permission to work in the EU.

Terms and conditions

The doctoral student will be employed on a doctoral studentship maximum 4 years full-time.
