Position and Research Overview:

The advertised position is a project-independent research position without teaching responsibilities. It allows for the autonomous selection of a specific research topic from the areas represented within the group. The group’s interdisciplinary focus includes not only classical topics in numerical analysis, such as the analysis of nonlinear PDEs, but also modeling and simulation aspects across a wide range of fields – from biomechanics and geophysics to polymer-fluid coupling. Further areas of interest include numerical algorithms for high-dimensional problems, alternative discretization methods (e.g., Lattice Boltzmann Methods), and high-performance computing.

A selection of possible research areas can be found on our website: https://www.math.cit.tum.de/math/forschung/gruppen/numerical-analysis/research/

Typical responsibilities you can expect:

  • Mathematical derivation, analysis, and comparison of models, methods, and simulation approaches
  • Formal proofs, e.g., for convergence, existence, and uniqueness of solutions
  • Fast prototyping of new ideas in individual code
  • Implementation of new models, methods, and algorithms into an existing framework, with a focus on efficiency
  • Design and realization of relevant simulation pipelines: from real-world data to mathematically and (e.g., clinically) applicable results
  • Publication of results in scientific outlets (journals, conference papers, lecture contributions, etc.)
  • Active participation in academic self-governance, e.g., through co-supervision of Bachelor’s and Master’s theses

Requirements – What you bring:

  • Master’s or PhD degree in Applied Mathematics, Computational Science and Engineering (CSE), or related fields with outstanding academic performance
  • Strong programming skills and experience in languages such as C/C++, FORTRAN, Python, Julia, or MATLAB
  • Knowledge in numerical methods and simulation, particularly for partial differential equations and finite element methods
  • Basic understanding of mathematical modeling with and/or partial differential equations
  • A team-oriented, structured, and organized work approach
  • Enthusiasm for interdisciplinary projects
  • Optional, but helpful for certain topics: experience with Lattice-Boltzmann methods and their implementation, High-Performance Computing experience, methods of Uncertainty Quantification

Offer – What you can look forward to:

  • A dynamic, international team from various disciplines, with collaboration opportunities with international partners
  • A young and motivated research environment at an internationally renowned university with strong connections to leading research institutes and industry partners
  • A diverse range of activities in exciting, forward-looking, and varied research fields and projects, with numerous development opportunities
  • Modern hardware and infrastructure at the workplace, from compute and GPU servers to supercomputers
  • Opportunity for a PhD (Dr. rer. nat.) in one of the group’s diverse research areas
  • Salary according to the public service pay scale (TV-L E13). The actual salary depends on academic experience, tax class, etc.

TUM aims to increase the proportion of women in research, and therefore explicitly encourages applications from women. The position is also suitable for individuals with severe disabilities. Applicants with severe disabilities will be given preferential consideration if they are equally qualified in terms of suitability, competence, and professional performance.
