The PhD project
Piracy is a prominent and increasing concern for international shipping. To mitigate risk and prevent attacks it is pertinent to understand the spatial and temporal patterns of piracy. This project aims at developing spatio-temporal statistical models for forecasting occurrences of pirate attacks in space and time. The project will offer rich opportunities for both theoretical as well as applied research in topics such as space-time counting processes, space-time asymptotic statistics, and computational statistics.
You may obtain further information from Professor Rasmus Waagepetersen, Department of Mathematical Sciences, phone:+45 3122 4299, email:rw@math.aau.dk concerning scientific and practical aspects of the stipend.
Type of stipend
Applicants should indicate whether they apply for a standard 3 year stipend or an integrated stipend within the so-called 4+4 framework. See further below regarding required qualifications.
Requirements
The applicant must have documented strong qualifications in mathematics and statistics as well as excellent oral and written English language skills. Applicants are requested to attach a Master’s Diploma or transcript of records to the application.
If the application is for a 3 year stipend, the applicant must hold an MSc in mathematical statistics, mathematically founded data science, mathematical economics, or similar. Applicants who will complete an MSc of the type mentioned before the appointment date may also apply. In that case a statement from the supervisor including expected time of MSc exam is required as well as the MSc thesis contract. A possible appointment is then conditional on passing the MSc exam.
A 4+4 integrated stipend is relevant for applicants who have not yet passed their MSc exam. In this case the applicant must have passed 4 years of studies in a Master’s program of mathematical statistics, mathematically founded data science, mathematical economics, or similar.
About the department

The stipend consists of two SU-PhD grants per month (SU= the Danish students’ Grants and Loans Scheme). One SU-PhD grant equals DKK 7086 (2025 level). SU-PhD grants are paid for a maximum of two years. When the Masters degree has been obtained, you will be employed for two years as a PhD fellow according to the present collective agreement. Part B has a maximum duration of two years.
