About the position

Are you motivated to take a step towards a doctorate and open up exciting career opportunities? As a PhD Candidate with us, you will work to achieve your doctorate, and at the same time gain valuable experience that qualifies you for a further career in higher education and research, in and outside academia.

The position is funded by the Norwegian Research Center for AI Innovation – NorwAI, and will be based at the Department of Computer Science in Trondheim. The candidate will work in cooperation with the partners of NorwAI at NTNU. SFI NorwAI is a centre for research-based AI Innovation hosted at NTNU in Trondheim, Norway. NorwAI joins forces with 15 partners from industry, universities, and research institutes. Research areas cover competences that the Norwegian industry needs to develop cutting-edge theories, methods and technology, for efficient, effective and responsible exploitation of data-driven AI in innovative industrial solutions. The position is associated with the DATA work package, which aims at developing modern AI for data. The candidate will conduct research to augment data with the help of generative AI methods.

Your immediate leader will be the Head of the DART group.

Duties of the position

• Establish knowledge about the state of the art in AI
• Prepare data for experiments
• Plan, conduct, and analyze experiments
• Disseminate research results
• Support university functions

The main supervisor will be Associate Professor Benjamin Kille, and the candidate is also expected to work together with other researchers in the group and industrial partners of NorwAI.

Required selection criteria

• You must have a professionally relevant background in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Generative AI.
• Your education must correspond to a five-year Norwegian degree program, where 120 credits are obtained at master’s level.
• You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and an average grade from the master’s degree program, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared with NTNU’s grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic basis. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be assessed if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education.
• Must have excellent written and oral English language skills, knowledge of a Scandinavian language is a plus.
• You must meet the requirements for admission to the PhD programme in Computer Science.
• You must be proficient in programming.

Preferred selection criteria

• Experience with machine learning and relevant tools, such as PyTorch, Tensorflow
• Experience with Extraction, Transformation, Load (ETL) processes

• Enjoys working in team-based environment, but is also able to conduct independent activities.
• Highly motivated to publish at academic conferences, and in journals within the area of the position.

Salary and conditions

In the position of PhD Candidate, code 1017, your gross salary will normally be NOK 536 200,- per annum depending on qualifications and seniority. A 2% statutory contribution to the State Pension Fund is deducted from the salary. 

The employment period is 3 years. If learning Norwegian (level A2 corresponding to at least 15 credits) is to be completed before the end of the employment period, the employment period can be extended by 10 weeks after completed and documented the Norwegian course. 

For employment as a PhD Candidate, it is a prerequisite that you gain admission to the PhD programme in computer science within three months of your employment contract start date, and that you participate in an organized doctoral programme throughout the period of employment.

As an employee at NTNU, it is important that you keep yourself up to date with academic and organizational changes and adapt to them.

For the necessary academic and social interaction, it is a prerequisite that you are physically present and available to the institution on a daily basis.

The appointment is carried out in accordance with the principles of the State Employees Act, and Export control(legislation that regulates the export of knowledge, technology and services). Candidates who, after assessment of the application and attachments, are considered to bein conflict with the criteria in the latter act, will not be able to be employed.

About the application

The attachments (including a description of your scientific work) must accompany the application as these documents form the basis of the application assessment. The documents must be in Norwegian/a Scandinavian language or English.
