PhD positions in interdisciplinary mathematics

项目介绍

The Centre for Interdisciplinary Mathematics (CIM) at Uppsala University conducts interdisciplinary research connecting the mathematical sciences and other areas of science and industry. CIM offers training and expertise in mathematical modeling and computer simulation, and hosts a Graduate school since 2013; for more details see CIM’s web page.

We are now looking for up to three PhD students who will join CIM’s Graduate school and work on proposed research projects. The available PhD projects can be found on CIM’s web page.

Duties
A PhD student should mainly focus on her/his own graduate education, which comprises four years of study. The position can also include other departmental duties (up to 20%), in which case the position is extended accordingly. The PhD student will work with an interdisciplinary research project, with at least two advisors representing different scientific areas.

The PhD students are expected to engage actively in the activities of CIM, such as seminars and workshops. They will be required to take at least 30 hp (6 months full time study) PhD courses in mathematics, modelling, statistics, scientific computing and similar, offered by e.g. the Department of Mathematics or the Department of Information Technology.

RequirementsTo meet the entry requirements for doctoral studies, you must

  • hold a Master’s (second-cycle) degree in a field that is relevant for conducting research in interdisciplinary mathematics, or
  • have completed at least 240 credits in higher education, with at least 60 credits at Master’s level including an independent project worth at least 15 credits, or
  • have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way.

The candidates are expected to have an interest in applied mathematics and/or developing models in an interdisciplinary context. Candidates with a background in another area of science, e.g. chemistry or biology, with a strong competence and interest in mathematical modeling are also encouraged to apply.

Acceptance as a PhD student within the Centre for Interdisciplinary Mathematics will be subject to the condition of acceptance by an appropriate Uppsala University department into a PhD research programme.

Application procedure
Before submitting their applications, applicants should contact a supervisor (at Uppsala University) indicated as a contact person for a research project they selected and want to apply for.

Applications will be evaluated in two stages. First, the intended supervisors perform an internal ranking of candidates. In the second stage the highest ranked applications are evaluated in combination with the project proposals they applied for.

The application must include:

  1. Title of the research project(s) the applicant wants to apply for
  2. A personal letter of maximum one page containing applicant’s reflection on the selected research project(s), with focus on a personal motivation for selecting the project(s), and arguments why the applicant’s background fits the selected research topic
  3. Curriculum Vitae (maximum two pages)
  4. A copy of degree diploma (if degree is completed) along with a transcript of grades
  5. A copy of master’s thesis or independent project, or a draft and a detailed time plan towards completion if it is not yet completed
  6. List of publications (if any)
  7. Name, position, relation to the applicant and e-mail addresses of two reference persons
  8. Other documents that the applicant wants to be considered in the evaluation

Rules governing PhD students are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala University’s rules and guidelines.
