The Department of Civil and Industrial Engineering consists of three divisions: Quality Science, Industrial Engineering and Management and Civil Engineering and Built Environment. The department has approximately 100 employees and has its research and education both at the Ångström Laboratory in Uppsala and at Campus Gotland. About the Division
Industrial Engineering and Management is a broad, interdisciplinary subject that spans several sub-areas ranging from organization and management, innovation and entrepreneurship as well as industrial and social marketing within technology and innovation-intensive activities to automation and optimization, to machine design, production and production systems. About the Project
The project aims to facilitate the integration of 3D printing in hospital environments by identifying and mapping various business models, reimbursement systems, and frameworks to address clinical needs. The project is funded and conducted in collaboration with partners from Sweden and Switzerland. The PhD student will have the opportunity to influence the project’s design.

Within AM4Life, the position is part of Work Package 6 (WP6), which focuses on disseminating and exploiting new solutions based on 3D printing developed within the center.
Work Duties
As a PhD student in this project, you will conduct research on the implementation of 3D printing in healthcare, with a specific focus on business models, reimbursement systems, and clinical needs. You will collaborate closely with researchers, healthcare professionals, and industry partners.
The role involves collecting and analyzing both quantitative and qualitative data from clinical settings and databases. Your findings will be disseminated through academic publications, conference presentations, and interactions with academic and industry stakeholders to advance knowledge in the field.
In addition to research, you will participate in activities aimed at promoting innovation and commercialization of 3D printing applications in healthcare. You may also teach in courses and programs organized by the Department of Civil and Industrial Engineering, up to 20% of your working time.
Qualification Requirements
General Eligibility
To be eligible for postgraduate education, you must meet the requirements stated in the Higher Education Ordinance:
Hold a degree at the advanced level. Have completed at least 240 higher education credits, of which 60 credits must be at the advanced level. Have acquired equivalent knowledge in other ways, either in Sweden or abroad.
Specific Eligibility
To meet the specific eligibility criteria for this position, you should have completed courses relevant to the subject area. Candidates are considered eligible if they have:
- Obtained a Master of Science in Engineering from a Swedish technical university, including courses relevant to the subject area.
- Acquired equivalent knowledge through other means, in Sweden or abroad.
Examples of relevant educational backgrounds and combinations include:
Master of Science in Industrial Engineering and Management, Master’s in Technology and Science Studies., Master’s in Industrial Management and Innovation, Master’s in Business Administration with a technically oriented thesis., Master’s in Social Sciences with technical work experience.
Desired Qualifications
Experience in research on implementation, innovation management, and/or change management. Research experience related to the adoption or phasing out of technology. Knowledge or experience in 3D printing or broader digitalization efforts. A background in healthcare or a solid understanding of healthcare systems. Experience working in innovation management within industry or hospital environments. Proficiency in Swedish (spoken, written, and reading).

Additionally, you should be structured, pedagogical, and able to work efficiently both independently and as part of a team. Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with individuals across various fields are essential.

Employment Information
