About the position
A PhD position is available in the Linder research group which is part of the Center of Quantum Spintronics at the Department of Physics, NTNU in Trondheim, Norway. The candidates will join and become part of an international research environment in quantum condensed matter theory and experiments.
The PhD position is in the field of quantum condensed matter physics and has a duration of three years.
Duties of the position
The candidate will develop models to understand non-equilibrium transport of orbital angular momentum in superconducting hybrid structures. This is part of an effort to determine the merits of superconducting orbitronics. Such models can assist in developing new concepts in quantum transport where the key component is the orbital angular momentum of electrons rather than their charge or spin. The system will be driven out of equilibrium via electric manipulation of the orbital degree of freedom through current or voltage, magnetic field manipulation, or by inducing a temperature-gradient across the system. These results will demonstrate the extent to which orbital-dependent quantum effects in superconductors can be used to control the superconducting transition temperature and generate conversion between thermal, electric, and angular momentum signals.
Required selection criteria
- The applicant for the PhD position must have an MSc (or equivalent) in theoretical physics or nanotechnology or a closely related field. We require a solid background in condensed matter theory or related theoretical areas in physics or nanotechnology. We will not consider candidates with a PhD degree for the PhD positions or candidates with an experimental physics master thesis.
- Your education must correspond to a five-year Norwegian degree programme, where 120 credits are obtained at master’s level.
- You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and an average grade from the master’s degree program, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared with NTNU’s grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic basis. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be assessed if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education.
- You must meet the requirements for admission to the faculty’s doctoral program.
- The position requires spoken and written fluency in the English language. Such evidence might be represented by the results of standard tests such as TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE). The candidate`s language skills might also be assessed in a personal interview.
PLEASE NOTE: For detailed information about what the application must contain, see paragraph “About the application”.
