The Department of Archaeology at the Museum of Cultural History is excited to announce a three-year position as PhD Research Fellow specialising in Glacial Archaeology. The successful candidate will activate archaeological material that is emerging from the glaciers within the museum’s region, especially in Jotunheimen, Breheimen and Reinheimen. We are looking for a talented researcher, who wishes to develop the Museum’s research on the topic.  

The museum also curates the growing body of finds emerging from glacial archaeology, and works closely with the regional authorities in Innlandet Fylkeskommune, especially on the fieldwork side but also with research collaborations. We are looking for a highly qualified and motivated research talent to contribute to our ongoing research into the topic of glacial archaeology. The successful candidate will activate the museum’s collections of glacial finds to examine novel research questions. We welcome research proposals that activate the material in question from different angles, periods or key questions. The successful candidate must have a firm objective of contributing to the field of glacial archaeology, following the museum’s overarching research strategy and activating the unique collections in the museum.

The successful candidate will be based and supervised at the Department of Archaeology at the Museum of Cultural History. 

More about the position

The main purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.

The research fellow will be enrolled in the PhD program at the Department of Archaeology, Conservation and History at the University of Oslo and is expected to complete the project within the three-year period. 

The applicants must fulfil the requirements for admission to the PhD program at the Faculty of Humanities, University of Oslo, and will be responsible for applying for admission within the given deadlines. A final plan for the researcher education program must be approved and agreed upon no later than three months after the starting date.

At the Museum of Cultural History, all PhD candidates who submit their doctoral dissertation for assessment with a written recommendation from their supervisor within 3 years after the start of their PhD position, will be offered a 12-month completion grant.

Qualification requirements

• Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in Nordic Archaeology or other relevant fields, including a Master’s thesis of at least 30 ECTS.
• Fluent oral and written communication skills in English (see language requirements)
• Applicants must be able to read and understand material written in a Scandinavian language

In assessing the research proposal, special emphasis will be placed on 

• The project’s scientific merit and feasibility
• Relevance to the broader thematic research area
• General research-related relevance and innovation 

Personal skills

In the assessment of applications, emphasis will be placed on the applicant’s academic and personal qualifications for undertaking the project as well as the research training. Motivation for the position, good collaborations skills and ability to contributing to the museum’s overall research portfolio and strategy will also be considered important.

• CV (summarizing education, positions and academic work)
• A research proposal (approximately 14,000 characters including spaces/5 pages, references in addition) describing how the candidate would approach the given PhD-topic, the theoretical framework, methods, and any research ethics, including a detailed progress plan for the project. • Transcript of records of your Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. Applicants with education from a foreign university must attach an explanation of their university’s grading system
• Documentation of English language proficiency (if applicable)
• A complete list of publications and academic works
• A list of reference persons: 2-3 references (name, relation to candidate, e-mail and phone number)

No one can be appointed for more than one PhD Research Fellowship period at the University of Oslo.
