PhD in Mathematical/Computational Methods for Cavitating Flows and Noise Propagation

项目介绍

Job description

This position is an integral part of an innovative project aimed at creating a Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) model to study cavitating flows and their noise propagation. The project’s goal is to address the issue of underwater radiated noise(URN), primarily caused by ship propellers, contributing significantly to marine pollution. Collaborating with MAN-ES, a leading ship propeller manufacturer, and supported by funding from the Danish Maritime Fund and Orient Fonden, this project seeks to make substantial strides in mitigating URN’s environmental impact. For more details about the project, please visit the Danish Maritime Fund’s page:https://dendanskemaritimefond.dk/aalborg-universitet-towards-better-quantification-of-underwater-radiated-noise-a-population-balance-model-for-cavitating-flows-and-noise/.

As a PhD candidate, you will engage in the development of a novel cavitating flow model, addressing the challenges of interfacial phase transition effects across multiple temporal and spatial scales. This position will predominantly focus on the theoretical aspects of multiphase flows and their implementation. Hands-on CFD simulations will be limited to validation and benchmark purposes. In particular, you will contribute to:

  • Developing a cavitation kernel function for population-balance equations
  • Implementing the cavitation model in a finite-volume CFD framework
  • Coupling of the developed cavitation model with acoustic radiation models, validating against experimental data

Required Qualifications

  • A relevant educational background within Mathematics, Physics, or Engineering, with a strong background in partial differential equations, preferably in fluid mechanics
  • Programming experience in C++ and/or Python

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with numerical methods for solving partial differential equations
  • Experience in parallelizing numerical codes and Blas/Lapack libraries
  • Multiphase modelling in Computational Fluid Dynamics

About the department

The Department of Mathematical Sciences conducts research in a wide range of mathematical disciplines and has three study programmes: mathematics(including a specialization in statistics at the master level), mathematical economics, and mathematics-technology.

The department offers an international and informal working environment. The department is proud of its long tradition for good social relations and collaboration among colleagues. Employees at the department have great opportunities to shape the direction of their professional activities.

Working and living in Copenhagen and DenmarkThe city of Copenhagen is lively with a wide variety of music and cultural events, top notch restaurants, fresh air and easy access to natural parks, forests, and great beaches.

Information about life in Denmark in general, health care, tax etc. can be found at the International Staff Unit page https://www.isu.aau.dk/ and  https://lifeindenmark.borger.dk/

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master’s degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of Engineering and Science in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed at regular points in time.

Shortlisting will be applied. This means that subsequent to the deadline for applications the head of department supported by the chair of the assessment committee will select candidates for assessment. All applicants will be informed whether they will be assessed or not.
